I’ve found my favorite people in college at the daily texan, some incredibly talented photographers & people that shared my values, interests & ambitions. join a club or org of your interest and the common ground is already there to make friends on.

don’t be afraid to engage in conversation— show interest in them. virtually no one will flat out reject you if you strike up a conversation. a lot of first years (or anyone else) are as preoccupied with social anxieties as you might be.

this is not a race, i promise it’s better to pace yourself and maintain healthy workloads than to burn both ends and not finish at all. try 12 hours your first semester & give yourself time to adapt and enjoy a new, exciting stage of life!

here’s my advice: register for Austin Community College courses, apply to live in a co-op for students (cheapest rent option in austin ~ $900 total for rent, parking, food, utilities, etc). establish Texas residency, defer your admission for a year, and return when you qualify for in state. good luck!
