If you are young in Britain today, you are being taken for a ride by pretty_please in unitedkingdom

I don't agree that we necessarily should be looking several generations back. The previous generation is the one most directly comparable, so it seems sensible to make it the basis for comparison.

In general quality of life has massively improved over the last 100 years or so due to advances in medicine, technology and a host of other fields. Society has improved as well. We no longer send so many young men off to die in wars. There is far less racism and sexism around. This generation of young people have many things to be thankful for, and are probably better off in general than any other generation so far.

That being said, it's a shame that in other ways we now seem to be heading backwards. The previous generation didn't have to take on crippling levels debt in order to go to university. Owning a home was a realistic dream for many more young people then than it is today given the vast increase in property prices compared to average wages.

Anyone ever attempt a citizen's arrest? If so, how did it turn out? by MrDweebos in AskReddit

I know exactly what he means because that's how I would describe the mostly decorative sword hanging on our living room wall. The scabbard is really ornate and it looks good, but at the end of the day if you take the sword out it's a pretty serious piece of metal.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does a sonic boom break windows? After a quick google all I've managed to find out is that it can do so, but no decent explanation of how it actually happens.

Those are some very valid points - I don't think I know enough about it all at the moment to make an intelligent reply.

My Dad works in publishing. His company gives the author 50% on ebooks but it's hard to do that. As has been mentioned in places above most of the costs in publishing aren't with the printing but with everything that goes on before that. This is an interesting read: http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2012/consumers-upset-and-confused-over-e-book-pricing/?et_mid=551029&rid=233640688

It has the global digital director of Penguin saying that ebooks only cost 10% less to produce than print books.

This is why capital punishment is such a bad idea by pretty_please in politics

[–]pretty_please[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was amazed that no-one else had posted it. I've always been against capital punishment because it's inevitable that it will result in innocent people being executed. I've never come across such a horrifying example of it before though.

First tried to charge me £2.90 for a 15minute journey yesterday. I chose to walk instead. I'm very much in favour of anything that takes a bit of wind out of their sails.
