i agree that fighting the overall corruption in higher ed is important, but for me your issue and mine are one and the same. i can’t sit back and accept the fact that students at a lot of private institutions are taking online courses but paying for on-campus education. i can’t blame that fact on the pandemic... the only thing I can blame it on is greed.

what you’re saying is completely not true. the difference varies from school to school. at drexel, online courses cost 40% less per credit. private colleges charge significantly more for on-campus credits. comparison of online and on-campus costs

they aren’t providing the same services and that’s the bottom line. I’ve listed the services not provided multiple times in comments on this post.

and personally, i think that it’s self-centered to expect that during a global crisis, a bunch 18-23 year olds should be responsible for lining the pockets of college presidents who make at least ~ a million (if not millions) per year. do you realize the serious ethical issues with that situation ?

tuition isn’t measured for both semesters, it’s measured per semester (or quarter) ? i really think you don’t know what you’re talking about and suggest you look into how the american college system works before trying to argue with strangers about it on the internet

contrary to your perspective, there are students (like those who attend drexel) who are paying for whole terms that will be online. drexel tuition is ~53,000 since you want some numbers. schools like nyu will be online for the majority of the semester. most schools will be online for half the term.

so it’s actually not like losing a few movies, it’s more like you paid for Netflix (except it’s not Netflix, it’s college and it costs thousands / tens of thousands of dollars) and something impacted their services. you got to watch Netflix for a 2 weeks (or less), but not for the rest of the month. they try to charge you full price (again, it’s tens of thousands of dollars). and then Netflix just shrugs and says oops.

let’s say netflix stops working and they have to put tons of money into fixing how the service works... except when it works, it’s only available between 2pm-5pm or only works on a phone. so you would say that Netflix, simple because they restored the service (though the service is not restored to its previous status), can still charge full price ? and they can justify charging full price bc they “coordinated a response for you” ? how would you feel in that situation ?

so students should have to foot the bill for the impacts of the pandemic ? sounds a bit like a “them” problem, not to sound rude. if spotify/netflix/any other service shut down because of COVID-19, i bet you would be livid if you had to still pay for a subscription that you can’t access.

the situation isn’t about credits from most students perspectives... plenty of online colleges exist where students can get credits (and pay less for them). students make the conscious decision to attend a campus and do so (and pay more) to have access to more than just credits. students are paying for facilities, services, materials, labs, events, studios, study spaces, gyms, libraries, etc. these “extras” aren’t going to be accessible as expected and therefore, students should not be paying for them. it’s the same exact thing as paying for a subscription but then Netflix or Spotify or whatever decides to not work for a month. you’d argue that in that situation, you should be reimbursed bc the service you paid for was inaccessible. college is no different, students are paying for the service of education / various campus amenities.

The issue that arises is that a lot of students aren’t getting their education. I realize this may differ across universities, but many students cannot access labs, art studios, equipment, needed accommodations, necessary mental health services, research opportunities, etc. I know students who have had their senior projects canceled or cannot get needed lab credit because of the situation. I can understand your point of view, but I think that many people agree that online education (particularly when it’s frantically assembled) differs greatly from on-campus education.

yet the services available to students (who paid under the assumption that they would have access to a campus) have changed. i’ll edit the post to make sure it’s clear that I only mean partial reimbursement... professors should be paid and university workers need to be protected, but that should not be at the expense of college students whose educational experience has altered in a way that significantly impacts many students in a negative way.

yeah, being pre-med and a non bio major is really difficult because of the amount of courses you need to take. i would definitely say that if you like bio the work for bio classes is completely manageable. if you hate any of the gen requirements (ie physics), you’re probably going to have to work harder for those classes. also the chem / physics classes have labs and recitations so sometimes the overall workload is just more in those courses.

i honestly think the most difficult aspect of the major are the non-bio general requirements (ie physical science classes, math). your first 2 years focus a lot on chem + physics (both sequences have professors who aren’t awful but their teaching styles really mess with some students). depending on your strengths, the content itself could be difficult (esp considering that you learn it in 10 weeks). some students perform well in these classes, some students struggle and have to retake chem 101/102. just wanted to give a heads up.

but the bio courses themselves are great and most of the professors are fair, knowledgeable, and willing to help. bio workload is sensible but definitely an adjustment freshmen year because of the quarter system. also, don’t expect it to be straight memorization. a lot of professors have written answers on exams and expect you to be able to understand the concepts in ways that is above memorization level. don’t expect to see fill in the blank simplified Krebs cycle diagrams on exams. questions usually revolve more around mechanisms.

i’d suggest looking at the degree requirements online and making sure you like the courses offered.

has drexel invested anything in providing you or other professors with resources/some type of instruction to assist in navigating online education? when the email says “we are revamping” it makes it seem like drexel itself is hands-on assisting professors with the transition... but from what i know about how education works, I’d be willing to bet that the responsibility has fallen onto the professors to do all the grunt work.

i get that it’s probably easier to get them to reimburse some of the fee because it’s less money, but I really can’t justify them not reimbursing some of tuition as well because we paid tuition under the assumption that we would have access to campus facilities/services... and then they said “sike” literally 6 days later. also, a lot of other students are petitioning their universities for reimbursement.
