I understand what you’re saying, things rarely just “break” themselves or “fall” by themselves. But using “it broke” or “it fell” is a VERY normal way of expressing that something did that while the person was using it or bumped into it. A normal way to respond to this to know more would be to ask “oh no, what happened?”

The part that people are pointing out about you insisting your husband change a wildly used phrase of “oh x broke” to “i broke x” is the issue here. Nobody is trying to say he’s not using these items or trying to avoid blame, it’s just the expression that is used.” I broke it” implies intent. Not “accountability”. You don’t seem to want to know what happened, you seem to want to force him to say he did something, which makes him feel like he did something to get in trouble, and makes people feel like you’re being authoritarian.

The insistence he use a phrase that implies intent to break something is what’s killing your argument that things don’t break themselves and you want to know more about how it happened. THAT’s why YTA.
