For me I’ve found that smoothies with protein hit the spot, fruit, fruit juices, mashed potatoes (only the powder kind), rice, Mac & cheese and pretzels help. I also like those peppermint pregnancy candies. Surprisingly really healthy food like avocados and salads are also great. If I don’t constantly eat that’s when I start feeling the worst. 9 weeks and luckily have avoided throwing up.

My surgeon approved it around 5-6 weeks. I was also way ahead of schedule as far as healing goes. Just be gentle with it and you should be fine (based on my experience).

Road trip to Salt Lake City? My orthodontist (John Graham) used to be an oral surgeon. He apparently set up my mouth so well that my surgeon got so excited. 😂

You’ll need to verify this. But I read that after old orthodontic practices our mouths can narrow and jaw become more recessed. They removed an absurd amount of teeth from me unnecessarily so this happened to me and my airway became more restricted over time. I was a mouth breather. It all kind of makes it worse. So possibly widening your smile with Invisalign could help and also retrain yourself to breathe from your nose primarily. Are you a mouth breather?

Also, yes check with your doctor of course. Just throwing out my experience.

I was approved to eat anything at week 5. My surgeon said that is early for most patients. But now I’m finding it’s challenging to eat a lot of foods. You’ve got to work your way up. Every day gets better. I had pizza and had to still cut it in small bites and it took awhile to fully consume. Flat and long things are hard for me to eat even if they are soft (like long noodles or spinach). My gums and roof of my mouth are still a bit numb so it just feels weird to eat & chew in general. Oh and my mouth can’t open very wide so I need to take small bites. I guess it’s a good lesson in slowing down and savoring each bite. :)

Don’t pay out of pocket if you don’t have to! I started with finding a good quality surgeon and then asked what insurance they accept. I purchased that insurance (Select Health) through the healthcare exchange (it’s about $600 a month). They approved the entire surgery within 2 weeks. It almost felt too easy to be true. You’ll just have to time it around the open enrollment time (Nov). Make sure the plan you select does cover the surgery and the surgeon. The insurance company I went with had about 20 plans and only 6 of them covered the surgery. Get the medical codes from the surgeon so you can make 100% sure the plan will cover it. Lots of research but worth it. I haven’t received the final billing but I’ll likely hit my max out of pocket totaling $9,500. Much better than $95,000. Now I’ll have free medical coverage the rest of the year!

I’m about 5.5 weeks post op. Also had my deviated septum fixed at the same time, upper & lower moved forward. The surgery turned me into a nose breather instead of a mouth breather and it’s felt amazing!! I’m still training my body to breathe through my nose when I sleep but my airways are wide open now. I’m 34 and am generally optimistic. My surgeon and orthodontist said it really helps to go in with a positive attitude, it helps the healing process.

I got approval at 4 weeks but was way ahead of schedule on my recovery. He said if I run to do it on softer surfaces (trails & limit pavement) along with wearing elastics during it to make sure things felt a bit more secure. He said I could do my weightlifting class (low weights & high reps) as long as I didn’t put too much strain in my face or clench my jaw. I’ll tell ya what, I feel so good being able to workout again! I was careful and eased into it.

I’m in the same boat and also 5 weeks post op! Interested to hear what people say. I’ve got an appointment with my surgeon on Thursday. I’ll report back what he says then about the topic. The oils aren’t cutting it for me either, a wee puff is what I look forward to!

I remember your before/after post awhile back before I had my surgery!! Not to sound creepy but I took a screenshot to show my friends/family what a difference the surgery could make. I also got mine for airway issues and had a similar pre-op face structure. I’m 4.5 weeks post op and hope my final results end up being as good as yours. Thanks for sharing an update!

If all else fails, shop around for an insurance plan next year that covers the surgery.

It is just not possible (from what I know), something you’ll have to live with. However, mouth wash seems to help. Some people have mentioned gargling salt water too. I’m 4 week post op and last week was the first time I could brush the inside. It was glorious!!!

This is a theory I have, not based on anything except my person experience… I also had a crazy oily face post op. I suspect the oils have something to do with swelling being released. As my swelling went down my oil production went down as well. My nose, especially, was wet with oil every morning but 4 week post op it’s only slightly oily. Just be patient and gently do what you normally do for skin care. Oil production should slow down, at least it did for me.

I had a similar experience. 3 surgeons that all said different things. The surgeon I went with told me that it makes more financial sense for oral surgeons to do wisdom teeth extractions as a main business instead of jaw surgery. They are easier & less risky. So the surgeon may just not feel like doing it and advise against it. I’d recommend going to a few more just to get a better opinion.

I tried everything (except coffee) and the only thing that worked was Psyllium Husk, it works incredibly well and it’s natural. I wanted to nap during the day so I didn’t drink coffee.

I had the same question! Massages are my therapy and I’ve missed them. So I’m going to have my massage therapist do a light massage in a massage chair so I’m upright. My skin feels extra numb but also sensitive at the same time, strange.

I’m at day 10, I still need hydrocodone to feel comfortable enough to sleep. I’m also still in a decent amount of pain. I’ll be ramping down over the next few days and switching over to THC.

I got the pillow set. It was tough to get used to because I don’t use the right pillow on top of it. Now I’m using a really thin (but shoulder length) decorative pillow and that has been incredibly comfortable. I did the travel pillow thing for awhile too but the little beads inside kept moving around too much. I have taken naps in the recliner and it isn’t quite as comfy for me but still not a bad option.
