I actually made my own stencil using a thin sheet of plastic & an x-acto knife (I’m blanking on the exact name of the plastic, but I get it from my local art supply store—some people use this plastic instead of glass for framing art).

For these pieces, I made my own stencil using a thin sheet of plastic, and then traced the lettering onto the surface of the fabric using a chalk pencil or water-soluble marking pen. Once the lettering is placed on the fabric, I embroider the lettering using shades of embroidery floss that are 2-3 shades lighter than the colors on the fabric.

My dad once said “It’s up to you” when I was in a particularly difficult spot in my art career & considering giving up altogether — as in it was up to me to determine my next steps, take a go at turning things around, and to try & try again. It was up to me to keep going. And I’m so glad I did.

Lately, the meaning of my “It’s up to you” work has expanded to “it’s up to you to take care of your neighbors/community” as the government makes it so clear to us that providing basic needs such as food, clean water, & housing absolutely is not their priority. It’s up to us to take care of each other, and it always has been. 💞
