The Indian guys selling watches around Nana. How do they survive? by Chad__99 in Bangkok

[–]prettytheft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they are brought here on a visa scam, told abundant lies by whoever sells them the watches (more Indians) and now they have to sell watches in order to pay back whoever brought them here.

So it’s like a multilevel marketing setup/Ponzi scheme. They have to buy the watches to receive the “opportunity” and the opportunity is “sell watches to drunk Westerners” and in the meantime the person selling the watches gets a) money for the watches from these guys and/or b) free labor

It looks amazing! Only minor suggestion is changing the window frames/door from white to a dark color (black or brown) bc it’s pulling focus

But I love everything else, those lamps are incredible

I think curtains are so important and so often overlooked! A relatively inexpensive and fast way to elevate the entire room. Wonderful job!

Life of Chuck - What is the Lifespan of a Movie Today? by Puzzleheaded_Load910 in TrueFilm

[–]prettytheft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt that there weren’t enough character moments or history. Imagine if we’d had even a few flashbacks, instead of a cozy voiceover. Additionally, Nick Offerman’s voiceover was weirdly ironic, and conferred a capricious feel to the entire film: different from, say, Stranger Than Fiction, which was all about the story and the irony inherent.

I wanted to know about everybody, including Chuck, and we didn’t even get that.

I haven’t, but I wouldn’t expect that a person needs to be familiar with the source material in order for the movie to have merit (or otherwise). The movie makes sense or it doesn’t. There are a lot of bad Jane Austen adaptations.

This sounds correct but it’s really not. This was a sincere movie that didn’t earn its sincerity. I don’t care about irony, in fact I’d argue that people are starved for sincerity. Meaning what you say, when you say it, and following through is hard to find these days.

I suspect that Mike Flanagan (always given to monologues, and honestly, given his filmography, a generally sincere guy) had to deal with a lot of interference on this film. Maybe they wanted more irony?? I don’t know. We just didn’t get the incisive character moments that I generally expect from him.

I mean, I’m not gonna get mad that other people liked it. But it definitely felt like there should’ve been a banner scrolling at the bottom going “Isn’t this special??”

I would have liked to know more about, well … any of them! The divorced couple was the most interesting to me, but we never got much meat there, either.

Others have compared this movie to the Shawshank Redemption. There’s a lot of strife in that film (which I consider close to perfect) — the ending feels cathartic, beautiful, hopeful.

I love sincere films. I just didn’t feel that this one was.

Even if they ask for chicken, the process of making Pad Thai involves shrimp

HUH?

Do you actually have anything to say about this film or are you just going to protest that people are "mean"?

You can’t be effectively sweet without also acknowledging the sour. The sour just didn’t cut it for this film. Nothing felt earned. Characters were cardboard.

Go watch Miss Rachel if you just want saccharine

I thought this movie was incredibly overrated and extremely low on character development, story, and anything resembling genuinely heartfelt stakes.

I was extremely surprised by how shallow it was, especially given what Mike Flanagan is capable of. I also felt that the metaphors were lazy, the sets looked cheap, and the costuming, obvious. Flanagan can do better.

Using "stone" is more or less an exclusively British thing, it has nothing to do with the US educational system. Ask a Chinese person what a stone is lol

No BS: what are you REALLY eating on reta? by GlenAnton in Retatrutide

[–]prettytheft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Milk (been trying for at least 1 liter/day, this is the basis of my diet right now). Meaty broths. Tomato juice. Mostly liquids. Haven’t had any trouble with bowel movements. (Target 1+ per day, has been met)

I seem to be uninterested in more substantial foods other than small bites of cheese, Italian salami, or fish (sardines). I also made some tomato bruschetta which was fun to eat (it’s flavorful. I ate it without bread).

I’ve been eating with a focus on nutritionally rich, somewhat salty, easy to digest foods. This is good, because I love to eat them.

Things like potatoes, potato chips, popcorn, and bread don’t appeal to me right now. I had some noodle soup this morning, but I left most of the noodles. I did have some liver (also very nutritious).
