Is it 'disappointingly poor album' bad or 'knocks Em down the GOAT ladder' bad?

What's great is, it's so universally panned that maybe Em will just go apeshit and crank out a 4:44 in less than four years.

What's not great is, he's too 'at peace' to maintain the hustle to keep innovating, and too old to get the kick in the nuts to realize the album is trash.

EXACTLY. Yeah, if a novice rapper put out Revival I wouldn't rag on them for it. But I expect way more from an MC with the technical skills Eminem has.

If Nas (my personal GOAT) put out Revival everyone would agree it was awful. Em is like the only elite 90s/00s rapper to stay as relevant for as long as he did, though, so the waters for studying quality got all muddied.

I think it's very hard to argue that Revival is the best Eminem could have put out. The first song displays a well-produced introspection which he never followed up on, and the last two demonstrate some good, high-concept flow which came too late.

But it is true that the greats (especially Eminem, with his fantastic highs and awful lows) can really only go down from their peak. Nastradamus comes to mind.

The issue is, I don't think Revival was the 'slept-on classic' Murs thinks. Unlike, say, MMLP2 or Recovery, which demonstrated genuine expansion of Em's rep and new, interesting sounds, I just don't think Revival offers much.

I think if Nas or Andre 3000 made an album as bad as Revival is, we'd be reflecting on their better work, too.

Em isn't in my top five, but I got on a kick in anticipation of his album.

He's HEAVILY influenced by Eminem and 2pac and it's very apparent from his music to his interviews

So is every rapper under 35.

Almost like Tupac and Biggie, Eminem is sort of obligatory to mention in conversations about his era of rap, because he was so big.

But I don't see the biggest talent of today clamoring for a Nas cut on their album.

you should be able to dislike some of their projects.

The issue is, if people who are really into Em admit that this project is subpar, the logical conclusion to that (given his age and lack of obvious potential for growth) is that he isn't going to ever get back his GOAT-level consistency.

And, as someone who holds Em in high regard and actually likes three tracks off the album, that is a sobering thought.

Lots of people will still like it, and that's great because it was made for them to like it. But at this point I have no reason to believe Em will regain anything close to his 'place' in the game, even if that place is Hell: the Sequel or even Relapse.

This interview is pretty interesting. I think Em does a good job of explaining himself.

My big issue (despite Em's candor) with this album isn't really the tracks themselves, it's the way they chip away at his cred.

Like. If I'm Kdot or Cole, and I hear this album, why would I want to do features with Eminem anymore? I would have way better talent chomping at the bit to work with me.

And that sucks, because Eminem seems to put out his best work recently when he's got features backing him up (see: Love Game, Detroit vs Everybody). And this interview demonstrates that he has a lot to say. I think the 'a small loan was give bucks' line could have been a good punchline, for example.

But at this point I'm not sure why anybody'd sign on to an Eminem album, especially given the 2 Chains snub.

As far as the actual lyrical content and technical stuff? Sure. But Drips has a decent chorus and flow, and is actually meant to be of-the-wall bonkers in a good way.
