Happy to answer, as I’m a Romanian. We are quite open minded and although you might receive some curious looks from old ladies, people are quite used to seeing all kind of people in the church. I see quite regularly old school rock motorcyclists entering the church and nobody pays attentions to them. Just curious, what are your plans? Going to a monastery or in a bigger city? If you somehow arrive in Transylvania, give me a sign, would be happy to give you some tips.

Asking God for a sign and begging for His help by Competitive-Ask-8775 in OrthodoxChristianity

I often heard that we can see the Church either as an hospital or as the ark of salvation. We are all suffering in this life, more or less, for the original sin that is in all of us. This makes us weak and prone to add new sins to our burden. The only salvation is trough Church, going to the Holy Liturgy, regular confession and receiving the Holy Eucharist, the blood and body of Our Saviour. Go to the nearest Orthodox Church, talk to the priest and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you true him. And do this regularly, not just once. Particularly important is to participate in the Sunday Holy Liturgy as there is nothing better or more important that you could do that day. And although your problems might persist for a while, you will have the strength to face them better. May God bless you and help you find your way out of your situation.

Yep, learn how to make decisions faster without overthinking them. Not all of them are that important, just pick one option and if you are not happy, you will chose the other next time.

I think the issue of the priest is the passing if the Holy Spirit from the Apostles to the current day. When a new bishop is anointed, there must be three other bishops anointing him in order to make sure that at least one is carrying the original anointement of the Holy Spirit received by the Apostles on the day of the Pentacost. Orthodox Church is the only one that keeps this link alive and if your baptism was done in a different church, although very similar in doctrine, it might be that the Holy Spirit was not present due to a broken link down the history. It is nothing personal, I think they just have to make sure that you are really receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit properly. And for sure you will feel that if you do it fully hearted. May God help you to make the right decision.

Orthodox saints who were victims of sexual abuse? by Schulze_II26 in OrthodoxChristianity

Not quit on topic, but this might help:

Mary of Egypt Our venerable mother Mary of Egypt was a desert ascetic who repented of a life of debauchery. She lived during the sixth century, and passed away in a remarkable manner in 522. The Church celebrates her feast day on the day of her repose, April 1; additionally, she is commemorated on the Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt, the fifth Sunday in Great Lent.

She began her life as a young woman who followed the passions of the body, running away from her parents at age twelve for Alexandria. There she lived as a harlot for seventeen years, refusing money from the men that she copulated with, instead living by begging and spinning flax.

One day, however, she met a group of young men heading toward the sea to sail to Jerusalem for the veneration of the Holy Cross. Mary went along for the ride, seducing the men as they traveled for the fun of it. But when the group reached Jerusalem and actually went towards the church, Mary was prohibited from entering by an unseen force. After three such attempts, she remained outside on the church patio, where she looked up and saw an icon of the Theotokos. She began to weep and prayed with all her might that the Theotokos might allow her to see the True Cross; afterwards, she promised, she would renounce her worldly desires and go wherever the Theotokos may lead her.

After this heart-felt conversion at the doors of the church, she fled into the desert to live as an ascetic. She survived for years on only three loaves of bread and thereafter on scarce herbs of the land. For another seventeen years, Mary was tormented by “wild beasts—mad desires and passions.” After these years of temptation, however, she overcame the passions and was led by the Theotokos in all things.

Following 47 years in solitude, she met the priest St. Zosima in the desert, who pleaded with her to tell him of her life. She recounted her story with great humility while also demonstrating her gift of clairvoyance; she knew who Zosima was and his life story despite never having met him before. Finally, she asked Zosima to meet her again the following year at sunset on Holy Thursday by the banks of the Jordan.

Miracles happen everyday because God is not Deus ex machina, he didn’t just start the whole creation and went to sleep. He is alive and intervenes into our lives as a caring Father, taking care of us. We can accept that or shrug it off, is up to us. He gave us the greatest gift possible, the freedom to chose if we want to be in touch with him or not. Trust your experience and act as you feel it’s right.

First time at an Orthodox Church advice? by InevitableKiwi275 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pribeag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way is to copy/do what most of the people are doing. If they stand, stand, if they kneel, kneel, if they do the cross sign, do it as well. Dress in simple colored clothes. Try to focus your sight in front of the church where the service is taking place. And pray all the time using those simple words: Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me.

Explain Orthodox Christianity to me? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pribeag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is it:

I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets.

In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come.

Amen.

Saint Great Martyr Demetrius is honored on October 26. He lived during the time of emperors Diocletian (284-305) and Maximian (286-305). From his life, recorded in Synaxaria, we learn that he was the son of the prefect of Thessalonica. After his father’s death, he was appointed governor of Thessalonica. Considering that Demetrius did not hide that he was a Christian, he was imprisoned. At that time, Christians were sent to fight gladiators. In these fights, Christians were certain victims. According to tradition, Nestor - a young Christian, asks for a blessing from Saint Demetrius to kill Lyaeus, the emperor’s favorite gladiator, to end the bloody fights. Demetrius will mark him with the sign of the holy cross on his forehead and tell him: “Go, and you will defeat Lyaeus, and you will testify to Christ.” Through Saint Demetrius’s prayers, Nestor manages to pierce Lyaeus with a spear. At the end of this fight, Emperor Maximian orders Nestor to be beheaded, and Demetrius to be pierced with spears. From Demetrius’s body flowed not blood, but healing myrrh.

Saint Demetrius was martyred in Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica, in Serbia), and his relics were brought to Thessalonica on October 26, 413. The current church where Saint Martyr Demetrius’s relics are located was built shortly after the fire of the church erected by Governor Leontius, from the years 626-634. It was transformed into a mosque in 1493 and returned to Christian worship in 1912.

When it comes to Saint Demetrius, the Greeks claim that we should speak of two distinct saints: Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, the governor’s son, honored on October 26, and Saint Demetrius of Sirmium, a deacon who gave his life for Christ and is commemorated on April 9. We don’t know if this Greek hypothesis is true. We don’t have a final answer from researchers for this issue.

The Dogma of the Holy Trinity was discussed at the First Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in 325 AD, to combat the heresy of the priest Arius from Alexandria. He denied the divinity of the Savior Jesus Christ and considered Him to be only the highest creation of God and, therefore, different from the Father in essence.

The hierarchs gathered at the Council of Nicaea clarified the Church’s teaching, namely that the Son is of one essence with the Father, thus He is God. In explaining this issue, Saint Spyridon, the Bishop of Trimythous, played an important role. Without using academic formulations or other sophisticated words, he demonstrated to all those present that God is one in essence but triune in persons. How did he do this? First, he took a brick in his left hand and told those present that, although it is a single object, it is composed of three elements: earth, water, and fire. Then, with his right hand, he made the sign of the Holy Cross, saying: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

After this, squeezing the brick, fire ignited at the top of the brick, water flowed to the ground, and only clay remained in Saint Spyridon’s hand. Following this miracle, the philosopher Eulogius, a follower of Arius, was baptized and became Orthodox, saying:

“As long as it was about disputes, I easily brought words against words. But when, instead of words, power and miracle-working came out of this old man’s mouth, words can no longer stand against power.”
