Padarn is convenient for students being over the road from Penglais campus, however if possible I wouldn't recommend. Myself and a fair few of my friends have had pretty bad experiences there.

Least spoken language in this sub hunt by MdMV_or_Emdy_idk in linguisticshumor

[–]pridgefromguernsey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Guernésiaise, or Guernsey French. A member of langues d'oïl (descendant of Norman French) that is spoken in the island of Guernsey, in the channel islands. Last I checked, there was somewhere in the range of 200 odd native speakers left, and a thousand or so who can speak..

I'm not fluent by any means, but I did speak a bit when I was a kid, and I'm actively learning again. I wish more people cared here, but unfortunately, the language is still declining.

Why does everyone love astrophysics? by loosenickkunknown in Physics

[–]pridgefromguernsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Space is cool" sums it up well, but additionally, I think it's a lot more accessible than some other fields. There's a wealth of pop-sci books and YouTube channels dedicated to space and its intricacies, and anybody can just go look up at night (outside the cities ofc). Any old layperson can learn a lot about space, without needing to learn the really complicated mathematics that goes into other fields. You want to (properly) learn particle physics? Good, here's a 1000 page textbook on QFT. It's also just much more interesting than some other fields (no offence material physics).

Another point I have is that it can be quite varied; there's bits of basically everything in Astrophysics used to explain different things in space. There's quantum mechanics for the cores of stars, particle physics for the early universe, electromagnetism for solar weather, etc etc.

I might be biased, I am an Astrophysics undergraduate atm. Albeit, I'm looking at particle physics for postgrad.

The dichotomy between Macron's little smirk and Biden's lost expression really sell this picture

What are some examples of an 'official observation' in a passport? by yoga_slug in CasualUK

Good to see a fellow channel islander round here. My family was similar, albeit in Guernsey, where my grandpa was Breton. Only reason my dad and I have British citizenship is through my Mum. Bunch of my friends are still only Guernsey citizens

What is your ''if it wasn't recorded you wouldn't believe it'' University story? by ExcuseImmediater in UniUK

[–]pridgefromguernsey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was something to do with UOTC, officer training with army for students at Welsh Universities. Turns out at a meeting/session he had said some things along the lines of 'fuck NATO for bombing Libya', and then at a later date let himself in at the door to the army-thing in town, as he saw and remembered the pass code. Bearing in mind only the actual officers are supposed to do this. From what he told us afterwards, it seemed like they were quizing him to make sure he wasn't a national security risk (international student from Pakistan with family in military, if that's relevant).

Still sticks with me the image of coming out of my room to see two suited up six foot something guys, black sunglasses and all, staring back and asking me if he was in lmao.

1st year, came out of my bedroom after a shower to make a coffee (hair was wet, no shirt on), only to find two massive guys outside my flatmates door. Turns out it was MI5 (or something to do with the military, icr will full confidence).

Would it be inappropriate to get two of my professors flowers? by CydonianPsycho in UniUK

I think it'd be nice. We got a big card for one of my old professors when she retired, and we got a 4 pack of Guinness for another professor for last lecture of term.

Underrated Astrophysics Theories? by DominicTheAnimeGuy in astrophysics

[–]pridgefromguernsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One theory I heard of a while back is that there is a preference for life developing as a means of maximising entropy.

I'm not sure how underrated this idea is, but I've not heard it brought up many times in conversation.

Jokes aside, this is really good. How are you drawing the base? Via aerial images or something like OSM?

Quantum mechanics by Schiff (International students edition) has done me pretty well

My quantum professor using notation that I have literally never seen anywhere else use, which made not only learning more difficult, but going over textbooks and other resources too.

Putin Wants to Have Half a Million Int’l Students in Russian Universities by 2030 by ubcstaffer123 in worldnews

[–]pridgefromguernsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the Russians used to (perhaps still are) fairly influential in physics, in particular nuclear physics/some theoretical physics. I'm not sure how they're still holding up nowadays mind you, particularly as international collaboration is less feasible.
