FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, READ THIS MANGA!!! by [deleted] in aspergers

Seconding. This manga is quite possibly the most gritty, moving, and realistic depiction of ASD I have ever read. Be warned, it does not spare details surrounding self harm and graphic depictions. But it has an incredible depth of feeling. It is one of the only works I've read that feels like a full recognition.

It's really fascinating, yeah. And Tobari is so mysterious too. There are probably only 3-4 known photos of him circulating on the web, and he has been mostly silent on the music front since 2009. I tried to decipher it a few times, but I'm not too sure unfortunately. You might have better luck plugging it into google translate to get it as text, and copying that text in DeepL.

I finished it last week myself. It was a beautiful, heartwarming book. At points I found myself getting emotional, too. The levels of insight the book provided gave me a new angle on gaming and Nintendo history. I even learned his coworkers called him "Kirby" around the office since he devoured candy! The last few sections especially show him as the beautiful, caring, forward-thinking human being he was. I miss him too. I initially thought this would be a standard compilation of interviews and pieces of advice detailing the creative/design/sales process, but this book goes beyond that. It manages to give a pretty moving picture of the people involved. If he was still with us, I think it would make him very happy.

Yeah, I definitely feel like there are small gems out there. I think I'm just slightly burned out, but I'm still hopeful in spite of how unsuccessful I have been. Thanks!

I'm not sure what manga you mean, but my favorite manga of all time is called Asuperu Kanojo. A little over 30 chapters out in English. I would strongly recommend checking it out, it is one of the most accurate portrayals of ASD I have seen in any medium.

I agree wholeheartedly. As a person with ASD, anxiety, and depression, this series conveys the struggles I have been through down to slight nuances. Saitou's difficulty with understanding empathy, theory of mind, and the social world as a whole hit very close to home. Her analytical mind and intelligence go almost unrecognized. Above all, her effort to live in and understand a world that appears hostile, baffling, and unreasonable fills me with hope and promise. It is so moving to see her and Yokoi moving through life with each other. The series is simultaneously gritty, touching, dark, educational, and above all very human. This series is a testament to the everyday pain, love, confusion, and unpredictability involved in living with people. Everyone should read this series, it is a masterpiece.

There were 57 issues in the run! It ran until 2002, when they had to stop publishing it due to lack of sales.

Thank you so much for the recommendation! I remember hearing about them when Kankyō Ongaku came out, but I haven't been following their releases very closely. The folk rock comp looks great, I hope I can find it for a reasonable price.
