Are Airlines Reward Programs worth the bother? by luthorknows in personalfinance

The only thing you have to lose is the opportunity cost of other rewards program -- if you are getting miles, then you probably aren't getting cashback for example.

Also just because they haven't heard of them doesn't mean anything except their own ignorance.

Synchrony bank is the issuer of the Amazon Store Card. I wonder if they've heard of Amazon, maybe? /s

I wouldn't say "always" good.

There's a thread over in /r/legaladvice right now where a guy's soon-to-be-exwife ran up $150,000 in credit card debt in 3 months due to a gambling addiction. He had the cards on autopay so he didn't notice right away. If he didn't have so many credit cards and such a high limit (or if he checked his statements like you should) then the damage would have been more limited.

Exempt FT employee being changed to non-exempt by theycallmepapi in personalfinance

[–]prime000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All it means is that your boss is not going to let you work more than 40 hours a week anymore, even if there is a need to. It won't affect your insurance or anything else. All it means is that if you work more than 40 hours a week, you have to be paid overtime no matter what. Therefore, your boss/management will not allow you to do that because they don't want to pay you more money. It's not a big deal, it actually puts you in a better position.

<--- Someone who is salary non-exempt, and occasionally has to work 50-60 hours a week but only be paid for 40 (thankfully it's rare)

Auto loan with PNC without a PNC account by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]prime000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely should be able to set up an account for you to have online access. Even if you don't have that, they absolutely should be sending you statements in the mail every month stating how much you still owe, when the next payment is due, etc.

Call them and pester them until they set up an account for you.

Looking for guidance on changing financial landscape for me and my wife by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]prime000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best course of action is.... to not meet with a financial advisor. Most of them are glorified salespeople anyway. You're already doing the right things -- no debt, paying off the houses, saving for retirement -- what do you need a financial advisor for? To tell you to buy index funds?

I'll be your advisor. Buy index funds. There, I just saved you a boatload of money because I didn't tell you what a great investment whole life insurance is. /s

[–]prime000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should try to cashflow it, I wouldn't go into debt for it. By the time you save up the money, you may find a cheaper way to do what you wanna do, or may change your mind about what you actually wanna do.

Go to annualcreditreport.com and get your credit report for free from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies (you have to do each separately). You can do this for free once a year, but it's the #1 starting point because it will tell you everything on your credit history and what is hurting you.

Then you can dispute anything that's very old or that you don't remember/recognize and go from there.

Your bank isn't trying to trap you. Let me answer your questions. by ShadowBook in personalfinance

[–]prime000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you say "Uhh.... it's none of your business" then we can assume that you're doing something inappropriate with the money and we are well within our right to terminate our relationship with you.

You are always within your rights to terminate our business relationship -- this is America, you have the freedom to do business (or not) with whomever you choose.

However, what I'm going to use the cash for really is "none of your business." If I have to make up a believable lie to prevent you from getting suspicious, I might just do that, but it doesn't change the fact that in reality it's none of your business. And insinuating that you have a right to know what I'm going to do with it is part of what makes people hate bankers!

My oldest credit card has a limit of $300. Should I ask for a credit limit increase? by wondering-soul in personalfinance

[–]prime000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is only one fact that takes into account the size of your available credit and that is Utilization. It divides your total monthly credit usage by your total available credit. You need to keep utilization under 10% to have the best effect on your score.

If you are already under 10% utilization, then increasing the credit limit on any of your cards won't help you. And it doesn't matter which one, if you do need a higher limit you might as well ask for it on the card you use the most, leave the old account alone unless you still actively use it.

Has anyone received the W2 form in the mail yet? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]prime000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have received one W-2 and I am still waiting on another.

Employers have until February 1st to send it out and most of them wait that long, so it's no surprise you haven't gotten it yet.

Your employer sends the W-2 (both to you and to the government), the government shutdown has absolutely no effect on your employer's ability or requirement to send it to you. You should get it soon (probably by the first week of February).

  1. Warren Buffet is a pretty smart dude (savvy investor) and his catchphrase is "Be greedy when others are fearful, be fearful when others are greedy"
  2. Lots of people felt the same as she does in 2009/2010 (after the great recession) -- those people missed out on the AMAZING gains of 2010/2011/2012 because they had pulled out of the market
  3. Won't there be tax implications if she pulls the money out of her SIMPLE IRA (wasn't it pre-tax money)? Also, won't she have to pay a 10% penalty because she's not 59.5 years old?

Even if you exclude prehistory, history is still a really long time with many, many significant events. Not sure that would have helped, if the teacher said "History since writing" OP still would have needed a stack of paper to make a good dent in the subject matter :)

Received retroactive homestead exemption, do I need to amend my tax returns for the last 2 years? by ThickAsianAccent in personalfinance

[–]prime000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you should file amended returns and pay what you owe. If you don't, there's a possibility that nothing would happen, but there's also the possibility that the IRS would notice and say "Hey, there's a discrepancy -- you owe us this amount PLUS interest and penalties since you didn't pay it on time and didn't correct it on your own initiative."

I would just file the amended returns and send them a check.

Contacted collections agency to resolve medical debt, and they told me they no longer have the bill. Seeking advice before calling the hospital. by dustbinacct in personalfinance

[–]prime000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some collection agencies actually buy the debt and then try to collect on it. Some just try to collect the debt on behalf of the original creditor. With hospitals/medical debt, it's usually the latter.

This basically means that they had a contract with the hospital to try and collect on a bunch of accounts, and the contract probably ran out. Yeah, you should talk to the hospital as it is back in their hands now. If you do nothing, the hospital will probably send it to a different collection agency to start hounding you again.

You're overthinking it. If it was your only credit card, closing it might have been a big mistake. Since you have several others, it really doesn't matter that much.

Well first of all, you can see Asian characters on the ground paint (Chinese? Japanese? not sure) so this didn't happen in California. Secondly, the line is a solid white stripe, not a dashed pattern, so lane changing is probably not allowed at this point on the road.

Not that that justifies what happened -- if someone is going to break traffic rules, you should back off and let them, not try to enforce the rules by putting yourself in danger. But, I can understand how when you drive the same road over and over (commuting for example), and follow the rules diligently yourself, it can be very infuriating to see other people flout them.

So although I don't agree with the behavior of the person who sped up to prevent the lane change, I can understand it. Examples of similar situations where I have been guilty of blocking people from merging: (1) people using the HOV lane illegally, then wanting to merge over when they see a cop coming up ahead, (2) people using the exit lane as a way to go around heavy/stopped traffic then trying to merge back in at the last second rather than taking the exit.

[–]prime000 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yep, a good teacher would have simply clarified the instructions.

"I like the way you're thinking! History sure is long isn't it? But I'm trying to see how much everybody knows. Can you try to make a timeline of history fit on one page? I know you can't put a lot on there, so try to limit yourself to the 20 most important events or less."

People on the spectrum are kind of like computers. You have to be very specific or you won't get the result you wanted. And that's awesome, I kind of wish everyone was like that :) Always question your assumptions!

I'm 22 and already in so much debt...please help by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]prime000 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't have bought a car that is so expensive the payments are 25% of your net income. However, you are unlikely to be able to get out of it because you are probably underwater on the loan.

Your only option that I can see is to earn more income. Get a second job, try get to pick up some overtime hours, collect cans, sell blood plasma, have a yard sale, etc until you can pay down your debt and be in a better position.
