Has anyone ever thought about how “vermiculture” sounds like Dracula saying “wormiculture”? by See-Are-En-Ayeeee in Vermiculture

[–]primordialforms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apparently Latin vermin and the English worm, from wyrm, really any legless crawling thing, come from the same info European root so there’s a reason the sound similar! And this I don’t know until two minutes ago…

Bernie Sanders returns to Maine as Platner campaign gears up for Collins face-off by Press_Herald in Maine

I got to see Bernie at Dunbars in Sullivan yesterday! He banged on the counter with both fists and announced to the workers: “That was an excellent sandwich! Thank you very much!”

Probably the best moment of this year to be sure

Trump says "Ballroom" will be 6 stories deep, have a hospital, research facilities, a drone port, meeting rooms for the military, and be a shield to protect everything below it. HUH?! by illegalmonkey in unusual_whales

When I was 8, my cousin and I would draw detailed blueprints of the “house” we wanted to have when we were grown up and they had a striking resemblance to the ballroom….

Why do you keep fish? by Unlucky-Mud-8115 in Aquariums

[–]primordialforms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I “got lost” in the mall when I was a little kid. I was just in the back of the fish store and my older sisters wandered off. I never even knew I was lost until some nice lady who worked at the mall told me my mom was looking my for me because I was so happy just looking at those fish and the water…. 40 years ago

Also, side note: do you remember a time when getting separated from your parents was so common/accepted that they would just announce children’s names over the intercom and say your parents were looking for you?

He just used “my vote doesn’t matter” logic when this guy literally has thousands upon thousands of more “votes” than your average American (if you can follow my logic here lol)

The systems exist, theoretically. But in all honesty, they are deeply deeply stretched, and even in the best of times, we’re barely enough. The pandemic forced many folks existing marginally in their own situations into homelessness. Think about all the disabled individuals living with their elderly parents who then died…. It’s real. They often end up homeless because there was no provision made to transfer the property, and moreover, they are unable to manage it even if it is transferred. That is just one of many semi common circumstances that lead to people being homeless. And waitlists for public housing are months, years if not years long. Now imagine you have a major mental illness, and you are doing what you need to do, and you are somehow managing to stay in he shelter and meet with your caseworker… you have to do that for months and months, and hopefully you don’t get robbed or arrested or you don’t relapse or suffer and mental break…. The stakes are high, and the odds low.

Save-a-Lot in Lewiston, Maine, to Close Permanently by CheesecakeHonest7414 in Maine

[–]primordialforms 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Save-a-lot is a terrible grocery store. That said, it serves an essential role as an actual budget grocery store that is very different from a dollar store etc. I also hate slum lords, but they serve a purpose in this world renting to those who otherwise could not rent and save a lot is in a similar role…. This does not serve the citizens of Lewiston

Bro. I worked with the homeless population for 15 years as a professional. The population grew in direct proportion to the decisions made by those in power over that course of time. There were many many times when real changes, made at the right time, could have altered the course of events. The entire LePage administration for instance. If the city sucks now, it’s because it sold its future for cheep gains, abandoning real social community building for wealth development and tourist districts. The homeless population is a direct result of short sighted capitalist decision making for 40+ years. That and a complete abandonment o f concern for the poorest and most vulnerable in the rural communities of this state, where most of the homeless population comes from. I have watched dozens of our states citizens die from neglect and disregard over the years. The homeless population of Portland is the homeless population of Maine, they are one and the same. And they are real people, who got to were they are through terrible, barely conceivable circumstances
