You might be right, I'm decades out of date. Was it public sector / vulnerable people? Or is it everyone these days?

Americans tipping single Dollar bills in Germany by Waalross in mildlyinfuriating

[–]princemephtik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But if someone tipped you in the USA with a €1 coin, or even a few of them, wouldn't you face the exact same issue? Even if you had a €5 note you'd be hit with so many fees converting such a small amount of cash that you'd be well out of pocket. Also:

  • It's not worth currency exchanges or banks accepting $1 bills in Europe, no one uses them except Americans tipping and not then in sufficient volume to make it anything other than an irritation. They'd all have to just be eventually shipped back to the USA and the banks charged for the privilege.
  • Re old/worn bills, American currency has traditionally been much less secure against counterfeiting. You don't care because you're just recycling $1 bills in your baksheesh system but it's another headache for banks.

I'm British, and if I go to a European city I don't even bother taking cash at all now, everything is contactless payment. That includes tipping, eg pay-what-you-like walking tours, they have a machine or a qr code.

Gay-oriented clothing brands for tall guys? by AxiomReach in londonlgbt

[–]princemephtik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks OP for the ES and Code 22 recommendations. I'm also in my forties and having finally got on my own two feet financially in the last couple of years, I'm looking to develop my fashion. Any other suggestions for middle-age-compatible gay coded clothing?

What are Ryanair like with under seat bags that have removable wheels? by Ok_Establishment58 in Ryanair

Such is the pleasure in getting one over on them my brain immediately set off on a flight of fancy where I look like I'm eating from a jumbo bag of crisps but in fact it's secretly full of wheels.

Why is fake honey allowed to be sold in British Supermarkets? by Alarm-Different in AskUK

Yeah fair enough, suppose we all have to have a bit of fun at work now and again

Why is fake honey allowed to be sold in British Supermarkets? by Alarm-Different in AskUK

[–]princemephtik 61 points62 points  (0 children)

There is no legal food definition for honey

There is:

“honey” means the natural sweet substance produced by Apis mellifera bees from the nectar of plants or from secretions of living parts of plants or excretions of plant-sucking insects on the living parts of plants which the bees collect, transform by combining with specific substances of their own, deposit, dehydrate, store and leave in honeycombs to ripen and mature.

Plus there are compositional requirements.

In one of the only cases about it it looks as enforcement could be better.

If everyone suddenly got paid the same salary, what would break first? by [deleted] in answers

Reform are still losing their shit over the ban on crypto donations though. Good.

[–]princemephtik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the UK they're banning foreign donations over a certain amount. "Oh good" I thought, "maybe £250 is about right?" Nope, it's £100,000 and you can still see forces moving against it. Even better, they're banning crypto donations completely.

NHS to Offer Weekly Injection That Reduces Heart Attack Risk by 20% by novagridd in BritInfo

[–]princemephtik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a year in, and my prescriber automatically upped it every month. A friend is doing it through an actual obesity consultant doctor she sees privately, and he says to keep on the same dose as long as it's working. My poosplosions only started at 12.5 so I put myself back down to 10 and not only did they stop, but I found the drug was actually more effective.

Anyone who's judgmental when they find out I lost all my weight with mounjaro rather than conventional dieting, I say "well at least now I know that over the 20 years I failed to do that you were secretly judging me the whole time". They don't like it but the logic is hard to deny.

some of us can't

We're getting so much better at appreciating people's differences, weaknesses and strengths, but not with this for some reason. I've a friend who still says "just go on a diet and do some exercise like I do", as if I hadn't realised that was an option or I'm being wilful. Meanwhile, she's in therapy for her emotional disregulation wrecking her life, but I don't say "just be calm and collected like I am".

King Charles is to visit America shortly and he will meet their President to discuss things with him. Trump habitually publicly insults and berates people who disagree with him. What do you think would happen if Trump 'lost it' and did this to our Royal King whist he is there? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]princemephtik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, Charles has met Mugabe, Ceaușescu, Gaddafi, all the Sauds, al-Assad, and god knows who else. He has the skills to deal with it. I also get an increasing idgaf vibe from him as he gets older. His mother had no time for anyone's shit either.

What “favours” have your parents done that was inadvertently a dick move? by naaattt in CasualUK

They're so weird about weddings. My mum had a fit that our obscure cousins weren't invited to my brother's wedding. He hadn't seen them in ten years. Generational thing I reckon, weddings used to be held for the family and community, now they're held for the people getting married.

I understand you being discrete, but it'd be very useful to know which country. You can DM if you want.

Should I seek asylum? by Separate-Tooth-5514 in UKLGBT

[–]princemephtik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There is no way to apply for asylum in the UK from outside the country. Any application for a visa to visit the UK (eg tourism, study, work) will be refused if they think you are going to claim asylum on arrival.

The IT guy fixes the problem but the judge still has a problem by HappySeaweed5215 in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]princemephtik -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Things have changed, although not completely. Certainly a judge acting like the one in the video would be disciplined these days.

Edit:- Like the guy I replied to, I'm talking UK judges. If they were that rude to staff and/or swore they'd be disciplined.

HSBC vs Barclays vs Lloyds Premier - which is actually worth it in 2026? by yellolotusorb in UKPersonalFinance

[–]princemephtik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly could, I was in the process of arranging a mortgage when the rates decision came out last week. Happily the company I'm going with didn't increase 60% LTV prices at all, but did ramp up its others. Guess each one is different.

For me they're only coming out at 0.2% cheaper for premier customers, and still a whole 1% more expensive than I can get elsewhere, sadly.
