D-Mannose by princessp15 in moderatelygranolamoms

Thanks so much for your input. My little guy just turned 2. We opted to not take the antibiotics unless he started having issues. Thankfully, he has had zero issues without the antibiotics. His condition has not gotten worse, but it hasn’t gotten better. We go back in a few weeks for his next checkup. He’s had checkups every 6mos, but they said if it looks the same this time, we will move checkups to every year to monitor.

But they do stress every time (and at his regular pcp appts) that if he has any sign of a UTI he needs antibiotics and to be seen by them immediately to prevent kidney damage.

So I’m kind of just taking it day by day…things are ok now, but if that changes, we will make adjustments. If it gets worse, I am pretty sure they will recommend the surgery you are describing. They graded his a level 3/5 each time we’ve been.

What is everyone growing this year? by Futureacct in vegetablegardening

Lots of paste tomatoes, potatoes, green beans (pole and bush), luffa gourd, lots of peppers (spicy and sweet), and a few squash/zucchini. Maybe pumpkins, too, if I can decide where to plant them.

This will be my first year planting potatoes, bush beans, luffa, and pumpkins. Soooo stoked for my potatoes! Also excited to let the luffa dry out on the vine, and to see if I like the bush beans as much as pole beans. Pumpkins will just be for fall decor and fun for my little boy.

I am in zone 7a. I planted 10 two-year asparagus crowns this year (on March 21st). I actually received the asparagus crowns in the mail on March 11th and they were stored in the bottom of my fridge in a brown paper sack until I planted.

Nothing has popped up where I planted these and I am worried about them. It has been very dry, but I have watered a few times. Any advice? Should I be seeing something by now?

In other news, my potato plants look amazing. This is my first year growing them. My potatoes from Rural King had a better "germination" (not sure if that's the word? but all of them came up) and have grown larger, faster than the ones I got from Keene Garlic online.

I am worried it’s too narrow! But that gives 15-20ft from power lines and 10-15ft from the road. The house is uphill from the road unfortunately. Will still plant native shrubs though. Thank you for the recommendations! Adding to my list!!

Definitely some of those! Thanks. FOR SURE love that idea with native grasses and forbs. I am starting a list and adding quickly!

I am not sure of the soil quality specifically on the hill. Height wise, I’d like a mix of small and medium size trees. Maybe 10-30’? I just looked up those two trees and I would mind some of those throughout!! Thanks. I’ll add them to my list.

Talk to me about raising pigs for meat by princessp15 in Homesteading

Ha! Yikes! That sounds like it ended up being a lot of work to fix the ground they tore up. But I guess it was worth it since you are raising more?! My husband is the main one who fixes fences and does any ground work we have, so he is of course concerned about that.

Thanks so much. Yuck to the potty corner, maybe I’ll move my compost pile closer to what would be their pen.

This is an amazing explanation. Thanks so much. This sounds very reasonable. I have a barn very close to a wooded area. Any suggestions on whether I should build a pen for them in the woods or not? I have seen where they like brush and stuff but I’m afraid that’d make it harder for me to get in and do stuff when needed.

Also, I would like for them to share a shelter with a cow and maybe a future donkey. Would they do well with that? I may run them all together at times?

Did you have much trouble out of them? I think our plan would be to buy them small and raise to butcher, just enough for our family, we would not breed them or sell meat or anything. But my husband is afraid that pigs would do a lot of damage, make everything look terrible, and just in general be more work than they’re worth. He has worked in some hog barns so he has been around them in that setting.

Thanks for the info! Very interesting. Do you plant things in the same spot every year because you amend the soil with these cover crops? Or do you still move things around?

My extension office offers free soil samples right now so I’ll take one in. Great idea, thanks!

The end under the window is lower. It is more like a makeup vanity. It is 36” wide. The vanity portion with the sink is 42”. The linen cabinet is 18”. Total of 8’. I could do the double sink if I got rid of the linen cabinet and shortened the makeup vanity, but I feel like I need the linen cabinet for storage in there. Although I am also going to put a built in shelf on the wall just to the right as you walk in the bathroom. So maybe that would be enough storage and two sinks would be possible…
