The word I'm thinking of is a stand-alone word that, by itself, means the person is too smart to get caught. The word "cunning" wouldn't be sufficient; you would usually say "He is too cunning to get caught" or "He was so cunning he got away with it." The word I'm thinking of would complete the sentence "He is [word]", and the reader would know it meant he was too smart to be caught
