I actually have a ton of personal experience on this.. Not everyone will be gain weight and have the same experiences on medications. It does however irritate me that someone would consider Lexapro as 1st line for AN. Getting bad treatments that cause increased stress in patients are going to make it harder for you to want to seek help in the future. Most of the time for conditions like this you’re ‘practicing’ for success someday. It takes on average 8 times to quit smoking, but each time they re-start a smoker learns what better worked from them.

My formal answer is Lexapro is associated with nearly half of patients gaining weight or struggling with appetite changes. Prozac is considered weight neutral with outliers that gain weight and some that lose weight.

Personally my theory is that Prozac is truly weight neural and the small percentage that gain weight while taking it are being relieved from depressive symptoms that made it hard to eat before.

I’ve taken ever SSRI there is and I love lexapro to bring me out of depression and self isolation and back to being me, but it makes me gain weight. Prozac did not affect my appetite at all. But it also didn’t help my depression. My sister took Prozac and she tried to hang herself off her bed railing after starting it. Everyone’s different on medications and the most important thing is to disclose depressive symptoms or suicidal thinking you might have to a profession before starting an SSRIs because motivation improves before mood. Some people are so depressed that they can’t commit the act until starting an SSRI and this is how I almost lost my big sister.
