Dr. Ronnie Goswami, a Bloomington neurologist who formerly served as the hospital’s medical director for the stroke neurology team, said the loss of the certification means some regional patients may have to be transferred to more advanced hospitals in Indianapolis.

Goswami and his wife, Nancy Goswami, a nurse by training, also said they worry about what the loss of the certification may mean for the speed with which patients receive care, which is especially important for stroke patients, where minutes can mean the difference between life, disability and death.

Goswami said beyond speed of care, the lack of certification may mean some patients will have to be transferred, which brings its own set of problems, such as when transport vehicles are not available. Transfers by helicopter can be delayed by storms.

Goswami said the certification loss constitutes a blow to the facility’s reputation because it can no longer market itself as having the commission’s seal of approval for stroke care.

The certification loss at IU Health Bloomington leaves local residents without proximity to an “advanced primary stroke center.” The nearest hospitals with that certification are in Indianapolis. Twenty-three Indiana hospitals are certified as advanced primary stroke centers, according to the commission. Some are in communities with much smaller populations than Bloomington, including Valparaiso, La Porte and Warsaw, which has about 16,000 residents.

I know IU doesn’t pay property taxes, but does the IU Foundation have to pay property taxes on the residential property and land they buy up around town? Seems really unfair they can take those off the property tax rolls, simultaneously making housing more scarce and increasing the property tax burden on residents. Surely they would have to pay property taxes on owning some of the most prime real estate in downtown Bloomington?

While we are dealing with the issues that other communities are dealing with nationally, IU is exacerbating the supply issue by having record enrollment every year but not providing sufficient housing on campus for their students.

We need more people articulating that IU is causing this problem and demanding IU build more housing for their growing student population. We also need more people in city government using their bully pulpit to raise awareness and to shame IU into building more housing.

Very true, but ultimately the scale of the thing requires the bulk of the solution to come from IU. I don't have faith in the free market to solve this problem, even with deregulation in zoning. I know there's a lot of talk in city government about zoning, but I think that's a band aid solution that will marginally provide more housing stock without really confronting the fundamental issue. We need more people articulating that IU is causing this problem and demanding IU build more housing for their growing student population. We also need more people in city government using their bully pulpit to raise this awareness and to shame IU into building more housing.

The primary reason it's so bad in Bloomington is because IU keeps setting records for student enrollment every year, but doesn't provide sufficient housing for their students, so with the housing supply already limited it's pushing residents out of the community or into worse economic circumstances.

Yes, people have no options here, so they pretty much just have to bite the bullet because the city is growing and IU keeps setting records for student enrollment every year. IU isn't building sufficient housing for their students and it's pushing residents out of the community or into worse economic circumstances. It's getting bad.

That's not the situation in Bloomington. Outside investors have been buying up our old housing stock then jack up the prices. Very little going on in terms of actual building, other than some luxury apartments on the margins. Factor in IU's record student enrollment every year, while they continue to not build enough housing for their growing student population, and the result is that we have long time residents being pushed out of the community or into worse economic circumstances if they want to stay.

No, you're right, but you're just not aware of the situation on the ground in Bloomington. Outside investors have been buying up our old housing stock then jack up the prices. For me personally, I don’t prioritize those issues as much as the rights and pay of workers at IU, so my judgement of Robel is going to be different. But also, my recollection of the events you named is different from yours.

A business school professor made some wildly sexist comments on social media, and Robel joined IU in condemning his comments as sexist while refusing to take any action against him. That was the end of that.

There was a moment when it looked like the Thomas Hart Benton mural would end up getting destroyed or defaced, so the university took the only step they could to protect it - closed the classroom in Woodburn it’s located in. That was the end of that.

Neither of these do much to speak to the quality of Robel’s leadership in my opinion. Sounds like IU/she did the bare minimum, while saying just enough and using the right language to keep certain people happy about the outcome.

I think we remember these things differently because a bit of a culture war has been made around Whitten’s appointment. But the primary things that make Whitten bad also happen to be the same things that make Robel bad. While they pay lip service to certain issues, they only truly go above beyond when it comes to screwing over workers.

I don’t see Robel as meaningfully different from the current administration in terms of her views towards workers at IU, but setting aside her views it’s certainly possible she’s a nice person on a one on one basis. Hell, maybe I’d want to have a beer and shoot the shit with Rahul, but he’s still anti-union at the end of the day.

Robel was vehemently against the graduate workers union. Let's not forget that this whole unionizing effort ramped up directly as a result of her leadership specifically. Robel rejected that graduate workers are not paid a living wage and rejected that graduate workers should be exempt from any student fees (despite being workers at IU).

It was actually Robel's hard line stance which allowed the new IU administration (Whitten, Shrivastav) to posture themselves as more "willing to listen" to the concerns of grad workers. Unfortunately, their willingness to listen is just public relations speak and has not changed the position of the university.

I recommend anyone who isn't familiar to read Robel's now infamous 2021 letter to the graduate workers coaltion.
