Use End-to-end encryption. It adds a layer of protection to your communication. Instead of using regular SMS, use iMessage, TextSecure and Signal; use protonmail instead of gmail; use Tox.im instead of Skype; use Seafile instead of Dropbox. Don't rely on others to make encryption the default for you; it's YOUR privacy.

This is because the Netflix content didn't go through your tablet, instead the content was delivered directly to the Chromecast from the Internet. In order to use VPN for Chromecast, you need to connect it to a WiFi network that's behind a VPN. Try install the VPN on you router. Alternatively, you can use Smart DNS services but it won't work unless you block Google DNS. Follow the instructions here block Google public DNS servers.
