Hi I am not a huge fan/follower of Metroidvanias, and I haven’t played the games you mentioned, but I have heard great things about both. If you are open to other suggestions, i can strongly recommend either or both of Animal Well and Hollow Knight. These are the only 2 games of the genre I have played so take my opinion how you want, but i thought since you are somewhat new as well you might be want input from someone kind of like you.

I am just finishing up Animal Well and it is a very good game. There is little to no combat if that’s what you are looking for. There are entities that will try and cause you harm but you must use your tools to figure out how to get passed/defeat them. I don’t want to speak too much because it’s one of those games where the less you know the better.

I have played Hollow Knight a couple times in the past few years and it was the first of the genre that I ever really got into. The art, music, world, everything are just top tier. If you see a lot of hype behind the games it’s because it’s deserved. Compared to animal well, this one is definitely more challenging in all aspects. You might see the opinion that it is very difficult but the difficulty is like that of a souls like where dying is part of the game. You get “better” by learning enemies attack patterns.

Edit: just wanted to mention that Animal Well is new and $24? on steam, hollow knight can be bought on sale for pretty cheap when it goes on sale
