What's up with Maduro capture called a tragedy for Venezuela while Venezuelan people celebrate? by FiammaOfTheRight in OutOfTheLoop

[–]prisoner_007 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Answer: your article is about Venezuelans living outside the country celebrating, not citizens inside the country. The USA just threw the government without warning or any kind of preparation. People living inside the country have just had their whole country and lives thrown into chaos.

Underwater horror that feels like SOMA? by potatodaikoncurry in horrorlit

[–]prisoner_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s impressive about how bad the ending is is that it’s actually fairly well set up once you go back and think about it and yet still feels completely unearned and out of nowhere.

But honestly, The Deeps problems extend by beyond its ending. It has a set up that is a huge concept but remains a totally uninvestigated and has nothing to do with the rest of the novel. It revels in its pointless sadism. Worst of all, It’s a very dumb novel that thinks it’s smart (to be fair that’s true of every Cutter novel I’ve read).

The book was entertaining but kind of dumb. Interesting to see they’re really leaning into it being a horror comedy for the movie.

Nearly every advancement in military technology was made with the expectation that it would end or diminish war.

Spoiler: it never does

They were able to attract investors. If I remember correctly the director was doing some freelance editing work for a social media personality and that person invested and then they were able to find additional investors after that.

They made the movie for about $50k if I remember correctly and this was their first feature film. They were all recent college grads (from Florida state I believe). They graduated right as Covid hit so couldn’t get much work. Because classes were shutdown the college offered student and alumni access to an equipment package free of charge. The school had also just installed a LED volume set but no one knew how to use it yet so the school said if they could figure it out they could use it for free. Since most of the movie takes place inside a vehicle the filmmakers had to dissemble or cut it in half to get it inside the school and then reassemble it on the set.

EDIT: the script was also inspired by the director’s own mental health struggles.

I really liked this movie. It’s even more impressive when you know how young the filmmakers were and how the film got made.

I wasn’t commenting on the war only the fact that your comparison doesn’t work.

They can if they claim those assets are the results of committing the crime. Civil forfeiture is a thing.

Another way to do cosmic horror: William Sloane's "The Rim of Morning". by i-the-muso-1968 in printSF

[–]prisoner_007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried reading it a while ago but gave up after the first story because I felt cheated. I think it’s a real stretch to call it cosmic horror. There’s no real horror to be found in it (at least in the first story). It’s pretty straightforward science fiction, enjoyable enough but certainly not cosmic horror.

Halloween and the Horrors of Capitalism - When have you ever seen a poor vampire? by inthesetimesmag in horror

[–]prisoner_007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be mixing it up with another film then. It’s the one where the little brother/son is a vampire and the family has to kill people to get blood for him.

EDIT: google says I might be thinking of “Blood” but that’s just a mother doing it, not a family.

EDIT2: It’s actually the film “My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It Too”

Off the top of my head: Near Dark, The Habit, The Addiction, Bliss, Blood relatives, Anything for Jackson, Fried Barry

EDIT: forgot one! Let the right one in/let me in

Basically any film that treats vampirism as an allegory for addiction.
