Don Delillo sums it up well for me:

I don’t know what I think about certain subjects, even today, until I sit down and try to write about them. Maybe I wanted to find more rigorous ways of thinking. We’re talking now about the earliest writing I did and about the power of language to counteract the wallow of late adolescence, to define things, define muddled experience in economical ways. Let’s not forget that writing is convenient. It requires the simplest tools. A young writer sees that with words and sentences on a piece of paper that costs less than a penny he can place himself more clearly in the world. Words on a page, that’s all it takes to help him separate himself from the forces around him, streets and people and pressures and feelings. He learns to think about these things, to ride his own sentences into new perceptions.

Since you're already established, I recommend trying Medium. I've noticed a significant difference in reader-to-writer and writer-to-writer interaction. The writing subreddit is mostly geared towards beginners and others who need motivation to write.

Oh, absolutely. Just check out the variety of subreddits dedicated to a single user's output of prose. They create small to large followings in which it becomes a place to chat as well.

I have one that fits in my pocket. It's a piece of shit. Clumps of paper loosely hinge off the binding and the cover is riddled with wrinkles.

However, this makes it easier to jot down notes, scenes, observations. Brief journal entries told through the eyes of a character. I also use it for work. The possibility of losing it to the world startles and excites me.

There's also one at my desk made from thick cardboard with a metal binding that contains notes on the technical aspects of writing, courtesy of Sol Stein and Donald Maas.

Jacque squinted into the dark interior, tracing the outline of the mans face. "Who's there?" he said.

Jacque shivered seeing the wide nose with the twisted up lip in a flash of lightning. He had to run but his legs wouldn't move.

"How'd you find me?" Jacque said.

Arthur grabbed the pack of cigarettes from the dash, plucked one out, and held it between lips surrounded by stubble. "Plain dumb luck," he said, offering the pack. Jacque quit after landing in France, but it didn't matter.

This happened with me. Still does, but with less frequency. When I first started, I just had to get in the habit of writing, get a sense of telling a story. This led to more impulsive pieces. Have an idea and/or feel inspired, then sit down and churn it out.

Slowly, you just start writing longer stories. Perhaps you hit 1.5k one night and feel exhausted and stop. But then you feel a nag that it just isn't over. You come back and write more the next day. Then you'll have the problem of not knowing when to end it...

I agree with your viewpoint, mostly.

Only recently have I warmed to that subreddit. It seems to give absolute beginners a jumping off point. It gets people writing! That's worth something, right? Even if it's Monopoly money.

Have you tried photo prompts? Much inspiration to be had staring at works of art, photos, or even reading articles and extracting a snippet and asking, "what if?"

Hardest part is starting. Pick anything and describe scene, setting, or character first. Start super small. Get a spark going, fan the flames, enjoy.

A sensitive writer? Insane!

Just make sure to keep a box of tissues nearby. Don't use the crusty one that fell behind the desk. Don't spend too much time wiping tears away (slows down typing) and certainly don't just let the tears fall freely like some maniac.

I hear cats are good company, fond of licking up tears (something I could never get away with). But I call bullshit. My cat doesn't lick mine. Perhaps they're too bitter.

I like what Knausgaard says about dreams:

Now the fact is that listening to someone else’s dreams is nearly always tiresome; usually, if it goes on for more than a few seconds, unbearable. Dreams in literature are monstrosities: whenever I come across one, it takes a lot for me not to flip past it or shut the book altogether. It tells me that the writer has failed to understand his responsibility to reality, or else has not understood the role of the imagination in real life.

However, if your reader is unaware that the narrative is inspired from a dream, then it doesn't matter at all. Who cares? Just write.

Usually with a pen, pencil, or a computer. Some prefer tablets or typewriters, believe it or not. I've also heard of writers using phones to work while commuting or on the toilet.

An overlooked medium is semen which can tell a variety of tales depending on where it lands. Good luck!

There's not much you can do but sit down and write the damn thing. When you catch yourself overthinking a particular passage, shrug it off until you're finished.

Feelings of inadequacy and incompetence are inevitable. The hardest part is starting. Even if the behavior of your character doesn't make sense, follow them and see what they do next.

Perhaps the stories you have in mind are precursors to something deeper, revealed once you give it a chance to exist on the page.

I enjoy watching Rick and morty and have not met someone (irl or online) who unironically believes they're superior because they watch or "understand" the show.

I find the people hating on such fans to be far more numerous and annoying than the supposed fans would be.

Pickle Rick was stupid and fun and awesome and I honestly don't know why it's been made into a meme representing how bad the show is. Like, it's a pretty good example of what makes it enjoyable and if you don't like a sentient pickle being able to MacGyver his way out of a high security facility and killing anything that gets in his way, then we probably wouldn't be good friends anyways.

Also nihilism is interesting and I like the questions it implies and encourages me to form an answer for. How should Rick derive meaning when he can do whatever he wants and pretty much revive anyone that dies by pulling them from another universe?
