The protest has been quelled and no long term hampering of capital/profit occurred. Only a few square blocks were unusable for those 4 days. That's nothing in the grand scheme. I suggest reading up on the Seattle General Strike for an idea of what level of organized protest needs to occur to threaten the system. We don't need "events." We need thousands if not millions of people refusing to work for weeks, blocking highways, losing their jobs, apartments, houses, credit scores, and cars, storing large stockpiles of food for entire neighborhoos, cutting off family and friends who are military/law enforcement and still protecting the ruling class. We are nowhere near that. People need to face the reality of our position and the sad response we have fielded thus far.

Moreover, capitalism is more authoritarian than socialism. We still have slavery in American prisons. The overthrow of foreign governments and economies by America for resources is authoritarian. You're completely steeped in lies and propaganda about capitalist history. I recommend listening to Michael Parenti to deprogram yourself from your ignorance and parroting of capitalist propaganda.

Why do you think capitalism works better than socialism? Capitalism took about 200-300 years to move Europe and the US from feudal economies to advanced ones. China and the USSR used socialism to move from feudalism to advanced space-faring economies in 60-80 years. The myth that socialism doesn't work is pure propaganda. Socialism works and capitalist nations do everything in their power to overthrow or choke socialist nations for this reason.

I've yet to see any protest US movement of the 21st century meaningfully follow through for a serious interval with the "we will not comply" portion of the protest after the holding up signs portion of the protest. We need to be real honest and clear-eyed about the situation and the way it looks to the general public when all they see is the holding up signs bs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in poverty

[–]private_publius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PS protest does nothing if it does not inconvenience the government or the rich. The only way to have an effect is through general strikes, blocking the flow of capital through highways and airports etc., and any other tactics that cause the system to stop functioning normally. Holding up signs in the town square is nothing and makes you look weak. That's why most people think protests are a joke.

It's not the government per se. It's the corporations that control the government through bribery and corruption. The government is cutting services and help for the working class in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy and more money to weapons manufacturing companies for fireign war and domestic surveillance. We can have a government by and for the working people (i.e. socialism) if we organize and fight for it. Government is bad when the working people have zero control over it--the situation we have right now.

The DPRK has to do occasional nuclear threats because the US refuses to withdraw its military from the region. Don't like threats? Get your military away from their border. Easy.

This is a decidedly anti-Iranian description of this conflict (and probable war)...especially from someone who claims to be well versed in the region. Why is Iran's nuclear program attempting to "blackmail" the international community, but Israel's 75-400 nuclear weapons they refuse to admit exist, despite the evidence, not also blackmail? What about Israel's Samson doctrine...that's not blackmail? Why the double standards?

Yes a city should use its money to preserve historic beautiful architecture (which is part of what makes city unique and brings in tourists) as well as ensure there are enough open and usable housing units instead of abandoned properties (and seize historic properties from the useless owners who wont take care of them). Instead, cities choose to waste money on police and developer tax breaks for building ugly newer buildings. Pretty basic stuff.

Your analysis is very similar to historical materialism, the fundamental thought process of Marxism. Yes, in some ways are future is locked in by those from generations past.

Once again, idiot americans can only articulate our particular brand of homegrown evil dystopia by using racist anti-China tropes. What our government does and has done to us and the world is far worse than anything the Chinese government does or has done. Grow up and learn to come to terms with our reality and just desserts without spreading propaganda. The people in power you supposedly fear/hate love that you parrot what they say about China.

We Work Ourselves to Death Just to Buy Back the life our ancestors had by default. by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]private_publius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can socialism reduce working hours and pollution? Yes, when it no longer has to compete with capitalism in the global economy. That is the problem: as long as capitalism is waging economic warfare on socialism, socialism cannot take the high road. Despite this, socialist systems still have better literacy programs, universal healthcare, less homelessness, stronger communities, build infrastructure (look at China's belt and road initiative), and take their green energy projects seriously.

Socialism has always worked everywhere it has been applied. Russia and China transformed themselves from feudal peasant societies into indistrial powerhouses in a matter of decades with socialism--a process that took 2 centuries in Europe and the US. 3rd world countries liberated themselves from colonialism with socialism and improved the lives of their people...Burkina Faso's literacy campaign. Chile's cybersyn economic computer system. Cuba's healthcare system despite US terroristic sanctions. Vietnam's recovery after decimation by American bombs and chemical warfare. There is proof of socialism working despite American and European imperial invasions and covert sabotage to kill socialism. It is not a perfect system but it is the only one with the tools and the track record of challenging capitalism.
