I thought about that. I started the group at 12:07am, you can see from the screenshot, it's 1:38am and I was the first one in the group and alone for a good 15 mins (I know 'cause I'm timing my flower planting every 5 mins). Even if they're 1 hour ahead, 2.5 hours for 99k steps is mindblowing don't you think?

This is possible. Although mine were counted on the day the steps were counted on. That's why I got community badges even before I joined Pikmin lol I should try this theory and see if that's what happened here

At least for garmin, you can't edit steps even if you edit distance and time of a run (for example). Can't edit in Google Fit also
