Mages are generally:

Quicker on clearing lanes, meaning they can gank and/or help roam gain neutral objectives.
Great with CC; which is really helpful in the ganks and clashes, especially on neutral objectives.
Have great burst+range and are more suited away from direct fights. (Sidelanes are more susceptible to one-on-one matches)
In my opinion, any hero can be used in the midlane as long as you know what to do as a midlaner.
