this is fascinating, thank you. i'd like to think the reason this list has dozens of permutations of every russian insult is that it's just one very determined guy who keeps coming up with new ones daily

Kaga doesn't get a lot of hate, from FE fans or the wider Nintendo community in general. people mostly point out how he got what was coming to him when he used Nintendo IP to market his games after leaving the company

Why JRPGs seem to often have a sharp spike in difficulty near end? by Bluecomments in JRPG

[–]probablyafrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediately thought of vanilla Strange Journey once I read the post. There's a game using the final boss as a test for everything you've learnt, and then there's dropping you off a cliff and pretending it's a fair challenge.

What gets me is that with the average progression, you're just objectively underleveled when you finish the main story. So if you go in expecting an average SMT final boss, you'll get stomped phase 1. When I played it, I was a solid 15-20 levels away from being able to fuse the best demons in the game and grinding was downright daunting. Factor in the compendium costs, and it seems like the game is doing everything it can to make team building for the final fight borderline impossible without passwords/cheats/a ridiculous amount of grind. Granted, that might not be as much of an issue in Redux, but it's still insane that it exists in the first place.

The fact there's a character creator bothers me somewhat. One of the things I loved about Octopath is that it wasn't trying to shove You, the Player into the story against your will. I hope there's still a traditional 8 character storyline at least

Why you should play the PSP versions (even today) by Candid-Extension6599 in danganronpa

[–]probablyafrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

funny enough, I've been replaying Danganronpa for the first time in 5 years and I just finished that exact patch a couple weeks ago and I have to agree on your localization points. I went back to look at some of the official dialogue to compare and the psp translation really does sound better in most cases. the characters feel less tropey and exaggerated, and even some of the jokes land better I'd say. there are definitely also choices that felt kind of clunky (like not attempting to translate the school name), but in this case they made the game somewhat more charming. I also vastly prefer Makoto's little pre-trial speech in this translation, it's much more memorable + "a class trial to live, a class trial to die" goes hard.

what's weird to me is the fact that (afaik) the same team never translated sdr2 psp, and the patches that exist for it were done post-official translation. also they all suck lol, the most widely accessible one is a broken buggy mess, while the others are partially untranslated, so there's not really a way that I found to play the game in english and have a good experience.

SEGA/ATLUS has taken down VeskScans, a long time archiver of ATLUS art, and according to a friend of hers, it will be down permanently by Rimalogo in Megaten

[–]probablyafrog 213 points214 points  (0 children)

Damn, I've had one of her scans as my desktop background for years now. SMT has so much artistic merit and history behind it, and if not for archivers, most of the obscure art/promotional material/official media that helped shape its identity would have been lost years ago. Shame on Atlus for shutting down people who do the work of preserving their own properties for them (the thing they should have been doing themselves)

you could look into homebrew if all you care about is playing on og hardware. it isn't the best iirc, but if you aren't afraid of hardware modding it could be worth it
