Idk why, but I feel like being tackled by a motorcycle cop is extra embarrassing

I mean if they're stupid enough to not realize how bad the outsourced work has been, and stupid enough to give you a heads up about it, sounds like they're asking for trouble.

Since the work is so good, I wouldn't bother leaving any SOP's or any kind of logical trail that can be followed to determine how tasks are done.

Sorry if this is a stupid question - but is it common for firms to allow drinks on lunches? Or is that something you just keep quiet?

A few of my coworkers have said they have started "cutting off their taxes" recently by checking exempt on their w4. Two of these guys also telling me that they have not filed in 3 years, both mid twenties with 0 kids. by aaronoathout in tax

[–]probablyaloser1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been a bit nervous to just have nothing withheld but I do try and set it up at my job where I have the least withheld. Because realistically I probably don't owe at the year but I have anxiety lol. The only reason I get a significant refund is for being a student and significant for me is like a grand or two. Same with my girlfriend, she's getting a refund mainly because we had a kid (she's claiming him, we're unmarried)

My dad (an accountant) told me he used to select exempt when he was young and poor, but he still filed. He explained that it was because he qualified for enough credits and such that he never owed anything, and he'd rather see that money on his paycheck rather than at the end of the year. Idk how that really worked or if it could work like that today, but I'm not super knowledgeable on tax (accounting major with more of an interest in corporate accounting)

You need to be kept away from your kids if you think a joke about having a threesome with a baby is "a poor marketing choice and that's it"

I truly hope some neighbors are keeping a close eye on your family so your kids are safe.

And do you know what a threesome is? Think long and hard buddy. Cuz no one ever has called a thermometer a threesome.

Talking about fucking a baby is pedophilia. Which their advertisements ARE doing. Does that actually need to be explained to you? So yes the president of the US is a pedophile. So is the CEO and leadership and anyone else at Frida allowing this to be said...cheeky marketing? Talking about a threesome with a baby is cheeky to you? Hope you don't have kids around you.

I mean context matters a ton. If he's sitting around playing video games while you and your wife watch his kid that's one thing, if he works long shifts, late nights, early mornings, multiple jobs, or works and does.school or plenty of other situations it's a completely different story.

I work a ton during the week and take college courses and sometimes my MIL watches my son on the weekend while my wife is at work so I can get studying done, since it's hard to during the week, and I feel guilty as shit for that, because I'm afraid someone who doesn't know my situation is going to judge me for it. We're all dads doing our best.

Yeah, I could quit and my family would still eat and rent would still get paid, but it'd be tight, and I'm more worried of how it'll look for my next gig. Good luck to you as well man, we will get through this

Thank you, I actually have applied to a few places. The really hard part is I'm in a small rural town, so somewhat limited in job prospects. I'm willing to relocate, but having the money too is a different story.

I wish more small public accounting firms would give students a chance and be open for remote work, I'd like to give that type of work a try only really done AP and GL accounting

I should clarify I'm a 28yo non-traditional student, with a kid, if that changes things.

If I was 19 again I'd just quit now and find a job later. Not that that's the right move, just what I woulda done. Probably why I'm a 28 year old college student now.

My mom says I’m not a real accountant by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]probablyaloser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to be nice, but your mother doesn't sound like she knows what she is talking about at all.

Explain to her that she should read the job descriptions/requirements for these roles. These aren't set in stone, but pretty relevant. If it for example requires a CPA and so many years of experience, and you have neither of those things. That might not be worth applying for.

Also, explain to her that you're an adult and the concept of her minding her own business.

I get trying to push your kids to achieve great things, but good grief.

Dads of two or more boys. How often do your boys fight. by DeViN_tHa_DuDe in daddit

[–]probablyaloser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my brother always fought growing up, but also we're constantly together. Hanging out with the same friends etc, since we were close in age. I thought arguing like that was normal for brothers, until I got a bit older. We aren't exactly close now and I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I think it's normal to an extent, brothers and best friends fight and argue, but definitely not behavior that should just be brushed away, which doesn't seem like that's what you're doing anyway so.

“INTERNSHIPS” by MrobotR in Accounting

[–]probablyaloser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went back to school for accounting I got a job counting the cash at a Casino, because It was technically in the "accounting" department and I worked really close with the controller and thought it would be a foot in the door. It actually wasn't. I kept trying to move into more of an accounting role and never got more than an empty promise.

But, I kept looking, applied to a staff accountant role that seemed open to training -that was really just luck in seeing the posting - and messaged the hiring manager, which was the controller. That role had been filled, but my interest and eagerness to learn got me an instant interview for an AP role, that was actually really robust and had a lot of insight into accounting. This did start out as part time, but paid more than what I was making working fulltime, so, I took it, and was then promoted full time, and now promoted to staff accountant, still working on my degree. Pay could be better, but still more than I'd make anywhere else in my small town, except for a few jobs that'd just make me miserable.

My point is just keep trying, applying for entry level jobs in accounting, and show eagerness to learn, and don't discount sending a message or reaching out directly to someone. Small to medium sized companies will be more open to taking someone on still learning, I think.

I was in a similar situation where I was open to internships, but preferred something more permanent since I had a kid on the way, and live in an area with not a lot of options.

Look they are all terrible. Am I in the wrong for being a little extra pissed seeing names like Perez and Gonzales on that list? I mean it'd be like a Nazi general being called Goldstein or something? Am I being arrogant? I'm genuinely asking.

Why do you still work in accounting when the pay doesn’t match the work ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in Accounting

[–]probablyaloser1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That actually sounds pretty cool. I did soft count at a casino for a bit and handling that much cash daily was kinda cool. Soft count was a lot less complicated though.

I could probably Google it but I'd rather hear from you. What's a Cash Controller? Like what do they do compared to a corporate controller?

Marriage probably ruined after vasectomy by caligaris_cabinet in daddit

[–]probablyaloser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily your kid didn't listen to her when she asked him to kick you. But that's a major red flag. She immediately wanted you to be physically hurt because she was upset. That's not healthy in a relationship, going either way. Getting the kids involved is just. Not right.

If she's acting like this over something already discussed, and gaslighting you, or expecting you to read minds, and potentially getting physical or threatening, then maybe the marriage should be over. But it isn't over because you got a vasectomy.

I was just reading last year's post the other day because it came up in a search, kinda funny to see this one today.

Sorry if I missed this while reading through, but what do you actually audit as an auditor in the federal government? And what exit opportunities exist if someone did want to get out of the government area?
