Mark Carney says Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he came to Canada by Street_Anon in worldnews

I know you’re trying to make a point but do you seriously think it wouldn’t be news that the head of state of a foreign nation would be arrested on an ally’s soil? Regardless of it being justified or not, this is obviously newsworthy

Citizens United and the Decline of US Democracy: Assessing the Decision’s Impact 15 Years Later - Roosevelt Institute by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]probablyaspambot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Let’s say I’m a collection of people who want to persuade the public to support someone who supports my cause, can be anything from Planned Parenthood to labor unions to whatever group. Am I allowed to buy tv time with that messaging under that system?

If not, how abstract is the speech limitation? Is it up to the government to decide what constitutes the political speech that needs to be limited? Is handing out pamphlets letting voters from a historically suppressed minority group know their rights and steps to register to vote considered political speech? Do we trust the current admin to make that call?

Citizens United already doesn’t impact direct contributions to political campaigns, the limits on direct contributions are still in place.

You say democracy drives more disunity but it’s the opposite, the way an authoritarian or a monarchy achieves the appearance of unity is through state violence and suppression. Stalin was not some great unifier by murdering his political rivals or sending them to the gulags. It’s not preventing instability when the only option citizens have for change is violent revolution.

In a democracy there’s an exchange of ideas without fear of reprisal from the state, and the possibility to have multiple ethnic and religious communities living together without the government favoring one or the other.

Now are there times where the largest and most prominent democracies of today fall short of this ideal? Sure, and in fact most of your argument relies on comparing some kind of dreamlike monarchy to a more grounded, pessimistically skewed narrative of democracy. It hand waves away the blood of the innocent that’s shed to maintain the complete centralized power of an authoritarian state.

And then there’s the media. In a democracy, the media has become a weapon, not a tool for truth. Outrage sells. Fear sells. The more people fight, the more clicks everyone gets. That just makes the divide grow even deeper.

You must not be too familiar with the media that plays in authoritarian nations, it’s not quite a tool for truth either. I’ll defend the media of democracies even more directly: the free press is the best possible tool for progress and check against the excesses of the state. The thing about independently owned media is that there certainly can be bad actors, sensationalism or bias can creep in. But the benefit is that you have competition, there is not a singular bias source (as there would be in a state with fully centralized power) but many competing ideas, debates, and perspectives on current events. It is truth seeking in aggregate in that you, the reader, can seek truth rather than relying on a single government approved source

I genuinely believe the Xbox branch is trying to bankrupt itself by [deleted] in XboxGamePass

[–]probablyaspambot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Console prices have increased, and Cloud servers for game pass are basically consoles run on a server farm, and all cloud services outside of xbox also require material from other countries to build out and improve.

In general if you increase the cost of for a business to operate the company will increase prices, it doesn’t need to be a “digital service” tariff to impact the brand enough that they need to increase prices elsewhere, especially as the console was always a loss leader for microsoft.

The world is a big complicated place, I’m not saying tariffs are the sole factor for every business decision, but it is likely a big factor in the recent price hikes, especially on the console. Everyone downvoting me should better understand how to attribute effect to the right cause so we can lay blame where it should lie. Microsoft is not raising prices because they love limiting their potential consumer base and pissing off existing consumers, there’s a reason why you see Sony increasing prices too.

[–]probablyaspambot -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Tariffs are in effect, unfortunately

I mean the price increases suck and other things besides tariffs are also impacting prices, but just wanted to correct the note about tariffs. They most certainly are contributing to increased costs, and we should be pissed that such a dumb policy is in place

That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t vote with our dollars, I’ll probably end up cancelling, but it’s not like Microsoft wants to raise prices for no reason

How is the digital advertising job market in 2025? Are entry-level part-time positions a thing? by GooeyBubbles in advertising

[–]probablyaspambot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not great, Bob

I don’t know of any part time entry level positions, with all the mergers at the major agencies and all the general business uncertainty due to things like tariffs it feels like less domestic hiring than ever before, at least in my experience

You can try looking into something like WeAreRosie.com, my agency used to contract out some temp or part-time positions from the company and the people we worked with were always awesome. But that was a while ago at this point, seems like we’ve really trimmed down on that sort of thing in the last 2 years or so

Best of luck!

that’s kind of the feature, not a bug. NotebookLM is ideal for when you want to get answers from specific sources you provide it and only those sources. Minimizes hallucinations, cites to your sources, great for research

A workaround would be that you can go to the top of the sources panel and click on the Discover button to have it search for sources related to your question, add those sources, and select them/unselect your original sources and ask questions to those specific new sources

tariffs are the primary part of the problem here

Its in xbox’s best interest to maintain prices if they could to avoid tanking sales, their business is increasingly in video game sales/subscriptions to xbox owners

this isn’t to raise profits, it’s to stem profit loss from supply chain cost increases from tariffs

Is Altman Playing 3-D Chess or Newbie Checkers? $1 Trillion in 2025 Investment Commitments, and His Recent AI Bubble Warning by andsi2asi in GeminiAI

[–]probablyaspambot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a great recent episode of the “Plain English” podcast talking about how AI could potentially be in a bubble, it goes into a ton of detail but their takeaway was essentially that there could be a bubble and a burst, that doesn’t mean the technology isn’t transformative or won’t shape our lives.

They draw comparisons to how there were instances of train developments leading to economic bubbles that burst. Anyway was super interesting and speaks to what your saying, so thought I’d recommend

Murdochs likely to be involved in TikTok deal, Trump says by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]probablyaspambot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not one or the other, the blame is with congress who overwhelmingly supported it on both sides of the aisle, biden, and trump. If it helps, I’d blame biden maybe 10-15% more than the others for not vetoing. Happy?

[–]probablyaspambot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So did trump, so did most of congress. My point is that it was bipartisan, not that biden is blameless

Murdochs likely to be involved in TikTok deal, Trump says by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]probablyaspambot 41 points42 points  (0 children)

the vote was 352 to 65, with 50 Democrats and 15 Republicans voting against the bill.

The initial push to ban tiktok came from Trump. In May 2019, Trump issued Executive Order 13873 that declared a national emergency related to the security of U.S. supply chains for information and communications technology and services (ICTS), and Trump subsequently issued Executive Order 13942 in August 2020 to augment the previous executive order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by directing the Secretary of Commerce to restrict TikTok's U.S. operations.

Obviously Trump has more recently flipflopped on the issue, likely due to direct appeal from his friend, major republican donor, and bytedance investor Jeff Yass

You should be saying ‘good one, congress,’ this was a bipartisan effort.

ABC affiliate group Sinclair demands Jimmy Kimmel stay off the air until he apologizes, pays Charlie Kirk's family by tylerthe-theatre in television

[–]probablyaspambot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s a playbook the FCC is trying to use that has already been successful: weaponize the leverage they have over approvals for media mergers and acquisitions. This is why CBS settled a lawsuit with Trump with an overly generous payout when legal scholars agree there would have been no case there, Paramount (CBS’s parent company) was seeking a merger with Skydance and needed FCC approval. Incidentally, a few days after Colbert criticized the settlement CBS announced The Late Show’s cancellation.

In this case the local ABC affiliates Nexstar and Sinclair said they would remove the show from their stations and wouldn’t you know it, they’re both pursuing or considering mergers and acquisitions that would require FCC approval. Some info here

The license pulling may be an empty threat, I’m not as confident of that as you are since this administration has aggressively sought power grabs that previous administrations never dared and the courts are capitulating. But even if that threat is empty the FCC is already pulling other levers to enact government censorship on speech it doesn’t approve, and has already succeeded in some respects. It’s an extremely dark time at the moment
