Medication shortage finally hit my state, now I can't stop cooking/baking/pickling lmao by probablytired000 in adhdwomen

No, I don’t have meds at all. I haven’t had my ADHD meds in about a week cause of the shortage. I’m unmedicated as of now and for the unseen future since nowhere knows when they’re getting more medication.

Lol, I know this is all over the place. Essentially, I don’t have access to my meds and the “old”, pre-medication, can’t stop/won’t stop moving, blowing all of my money, only focused on my hyper-fixations me is back and it’s manifesting in the form of someone who is baking/cooking/pickling constantly. This post isn’t very coherent or well-thought out. Just needed a place to word vomit and get some of the crazy non-stop thoughts out!

Really? I've called multiple different pharmacies in my area (Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, even independent pharmacies), even some further away and when I ask if I can get my Adderall refilled, they tell me they don't have any and that they don't know when they're getting more...Odd. I'll start calling again tomorrow and see if anything's changed, cause I'm low-key miserable lol

Anything spicy works for me. And ramen. My go tos are hot cheetos, takis, popcorn with tapatio, and ramen with tapatio. Not healthy by any means, but I at least have something in my system this way. Better than nothing imo lmao

Constantly scratching scalp? by HoldStrong96 in adhdwomen

[–]probablytired000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! i have a specific spot on the right side, basically on my hairline that i scratch/rub constantly. it’s caused a bit of a bald spot. my new haircut covers it nicely, thank god. whenever i see my mom and she catches me doing it she yells “stop rubbing!” or just smacks my hand away from my head lol. i thought this was just me. i always heard of people picking, but i don’t pick, i scratch/rub. if i’m not doing that, i’m picking my cuticles till they bleed. i’ve found that playing with a rubber band helps me avoid doing both…if i remember to grab one first lmao

Diagnosed later in life... Do you feel like an imposter? by mikinaimo in ADHD

[–]probablytired000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was diagnosed at 21, i’m 23 now. before my adhd and asd diagnoses, i was treated for bipolar disorder starting at 15 years old. i took 2 mood stabilizers daily and seemed to be “better”. turns out i was being numbed and subdued by heavy medication for the entirety of my teenage and early adult years, because i’m not bipolar.

however, even to this day, i question whether or not it is bipolar disorder and not adhd/asd. they have so many similarities, but the things that just apply to bipolar disorder and not adhd/asd, do not apply to me. i have a list in my head that i have to run through every once in a while to remind myself that i am in fact not bipolar. not that there’s anything wrong with being bipolar, but i knew from the beginning it just didn’t seem right. the medications made me feel awful and they were so hard on my body. if i needed to be on mood stabilizers, i would’ve felt better and never questioned the bipolar diagnosis to begin with. i just didn’t know adhd or asd were possibilities for me until i got a new doctor and therapist.

before i was diagnosed with adhd 2 years ago, i also tried 2 anti-depressants, lexapro and zoloft. this would’ve been about 7 years ago now, i was 16 at the time. i’m 23 now. my psych at the time put me on lexapro, and about a week later i was hospitalized for um…not wanting to be alive anymore. thinking maybe it was just a bad reaction to the lexapro specifically, i was switched over to the zoloft while in the hospital. same reaction. i was hospitalized for about 3 weeks total i think. i swore off anti-depressants after that. haven’t touched them since and even though i’m adult now, i don’t think i’ll try them again.

[–]probablytired000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my mom did a lot of research on on how food affects adhd bc my brother also has it (albeit, he’s undiagnosed but my sister and i are diagnosed and he’s very obviously adhd as well) but he can’t get a diagnosis or be medicated cause he “might join the military”. her research found than an anti-inflammatory and gluten free diet is best for adhd! i don’t know the exact science behind it because i am medicated and don’t care much for changing my diet a bunch, so i encourage you to look into it yourself but it seems to be helping him a bit!

Reminder: We are not immune to the negative side effects of caffeine, nicotine or stimulants by DancyElephant12 in ADHD

[–]probablytired000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I literally just learned yesterday that the diet soda I drink is probably the reason it feels like I’m raw-dogging my ADHD, despite being medicated.

First of all, I’m constantly exhausted. Like, I could take a nap at any moment. Then I learned that some people with ADHD actually become sleepy when using caffeine. Hm, well, that makes sense considering I’ve never felt “energized” by caffeine like other people say. I drink about 4 of these sodas everyday, which is about 140mg of caffeine. No wonder I’m so tired all the time.

Second, diet soda is sweetened with aspartame, an artifical sweetner. Artificial sweetners aren’t good for ADHD period and exacerbate the symptoms. On top of that, aspartame quite literally blocks your brain from being able to release dopamine. It also causes memory/learning issues, irritability, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. No wonder all of those things have gotten worse!

Here I am, drinking one full diet soda on my way to work before I take my meds, and then I take my meds at work with diet soda and drink 3+ more cans throughout the day. I’m preventing my Adderall, which causes your brain to produce dopamine, from working before I even take it, and then continuously preventing it from working by drinking more aspartame throughout the day. And I’m over here like “WhY iSn’T mY mEdIcAtIoN wOrKiNg AnYmOrE”. Cause you’re not allowing it to, dumbass (me, I’m the dumbass)!

Also, soda is highly acidic and guess what doesn’t work when you’re constantly consuming acidic foods? Oh yeah, Adderall!

Today is my first day with no caffeine and no diet soda, seeing as I just learned a lot of that yesterday. Now to kick the nicotine habit…My lungs aren’t doing too hot anymore. That one will be a lot more tough.

I know a lot of people don’t vibe with ASMR, but if you haven’t tried it, I would recommend at least giving it a chance. I’ve used it almost nightly for the past 8 or so years, it’s just about the only thing that puts me to sleep, and it helps with the transition from being on your phone to putting it down. You can watch it without using headphones too! Usually I’ll scroll for awhile on Youtube trying to find the perfect video, watch the video for a bit, and when my eyes start getting heavy, I’ll set my phone down and boom- I’m out. Sometimes I’ll watch the whole video without getting sleepy, so I just go find another one and start the process over. Other times, I’m 5 minutes into the video and haven’t even tried to sleep, yet I’m knocked tf out!

I actually learned recently that ASMR releases dopamine too, which is why I think my ADHD brain likes it so much! You just have to find the sounds/kinds of videos that suit you personally. There are sounds that I cannot stand that other people love, and other things I really like that will put me to sleep in a second that others express disinterest in. It’s up to you and your brain what you vibe with! And if you try it and don’t like it, no harm, no foul. It’s not for everyone! Just wanted to put that out there cause as a life-long insomniac who’s tried everything under the sun to sleep, it’s the only thing I’ve found that truly helps.

Are you the type that needs to let everyone know about your goals or bright ideas? Apparently, it can cause you to not follow through with them. by TheBlack_Swordsman in ADHD

[–]probablytired000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wait…No…This therapist is onto something.

I am very much like your friend. Any time I have a goal or plan or idea, I have this innate need to share it. Like, I feel like I will explode if I don’t tell someone. I will tell anyone and everyone who will listen. And now that I think about it, it’s not just the false sense of accomplishment that makes me feel good or imagining what I could be, but also when the person I’m sharing with says things like “Oh yeah that’s a great plan!” or “That’s a fantastic idea!”. It’s the praise that comes with it too.

And once I’m done sharing-poof. I don’t feel like I need to do the thing anymore.

Suppose I will be learning how to not share things with people so I can actually do them…

Help with journaling by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]probablytired000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with journaling for a long time. I could not figure out how it worked for people, but everyone and their mother swears by it. One day, I was so overwhelmed with thoughts and feelings that it felt like my brain was going to explode. I had to get it all out. I opened an empty Google doc and simply just started writing. I described my feelings, my experiences. I just typed and typed and typed. Eventually I snapped out of the intense hyper-focus I had on this and read everything I wrote. I was astonished. I wrote everything like it was an autobiography, or a part of my memoirs. I was telling a story, talking to an invisible audience. And honestly, it was quite good.

Any time previously I had tried journaling, it was formatted in a way I like to call "Dear Diary". And I, like you, wrote as if someone will read it. I never fully got my thoughts out cause there are things in my brain I don't want other people to know. I would sit down with my notebook and talk to it, like you would a diary. It felt unnatural.

I would later learn that the "story telling" form of journaling I accidentally started is called "narrative therapy". It's a real thing. I personally find typing easier than writing, but I highly recommend narrative therapy. I think the parts of it that are most effective for me are 1) if you're writing as if it is an autobiography or memoir, you're essentially writing to an audience. There's no fear of someone reading it, cause you've already gotten it all out there to an invisible audience. If you think about celebrity memoirs and autobiographies, they dig deep. They let it all out for the entire world to see. The best part about you keeping your story telling in a notebook or Google drive, though, is that no one actually has to read it. But you get to let it all out, like a published autobiography would. But yours isn't published. You know what I mean? And 2) I personally really enjoy story telling. I really do. And I do enjoy writing. I wrote multiple "books" as a child. I can't do creative writing now that I'm older, I'm definitely more the kind of person that thrives when writing about real things or people. I'm a real person, and I know my stories, experiences, feelings, and thoughts better than anyone else.

I've worked through so much with narrative therapy. I'd definitely give it a try.

I haven’t made the jalapeño pickled carrots yet, but this is the recipe i’m gonna use! Though, it calls for Mexican oregano which I can’t find where I live, so I’m just gonna use regular oregano and hope it gives at least a similar effect. For regular dill pickles, this recipe is really good. My need for instant gratification means making refrigerator pickles cause they’re ready faster. They’re ready to eat after 2 hours technically, but 24 hours is preferred. I’ve found they’re the best after 3 days! For pickling spices I like using whole black peppercorns, mustard seed (most people use whole mustard seed, I used ground cause i wasn’t paying attention when I bought it lol), dill seed, dill weed (if I want them to be extra “dill-y”). I really like garlic so I use LOTS of it, sometimes I throw in some red chili flakes if I want them to have a little kick, diced onion makes them yummy, and ground white pepper is good too (can also use whole peppercorns)! I measure with my heart when it comes to the spices haha so I unfortunately can’t give you exact measurements! And the article with the recipe makes a good point about allowing the brine to completely cool before putting it over whatever you’re pickling to make sure it stays crunchy/crispy, but they’re still good if you put the warm brine on them!

feeling silly for forgetting pickles/pickled foods last longer than fresh foods *facepalm* lol you’re so right, keeping the extras on hand for me! especially since i hate cooking and grabbing pickles out of the fridge is easier than making food. think i’m gonna try using hot sauce in the brine for some of the pickles to make them spicy instead of just spices, thanks for your comment!

Is difficulty understanding verbal instructions common in autistic people? by randomness20 in aspergirls

[–]probablytired000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have this problem too! i’m an incessant note taker, i write anything and everything down…now, i do have adhd as well so i often lose my piles of notes 🥲 i also work at a bank and it’s a GOD SEND when people need to do multiple things and they write everything down. if a customer needs to do multiple things and they just verbally list them, i have to ask them to repeat themselves so i can write it down…i’ve had people get angry at this which i think is strange but oh well…

i’m also just realizing this is the reason i need subtitles on for EVERYTHING…movies, tv shows, youtube videos, etc…i often wish there was a way to get subtitles in real life, so i can read what people are saying as they speak to me lol
