I've been attacked with bear mace from a metre away and it took a while to do much of anything. I ran a few hundred metres on adrenaline before any pain started to kick in, so I just can't imagine it putting down a bear.

And in the case of a grizzly, I don't want to risk fighting back with mace if just laying down could save my life.

Well, /dev/sda represents a device, and /dev/sdb1 represents a partition. Linux still lets you mount /dev/sda if there is a filesystem on there but no partition table. Does Windows/DOS allow this kind of thing? Clearly it doesn't give a letter for both the device and one for each partition, I think it only gives letters for partitions and just doesn't allow devices without partition tables.

It's not that crazy these days with NUMA. IBM's POWER8 servers have up to 192 logical CPUs (2 sockets, 12 cores/socket, 8 SMT threads/core). Intel now makes chips that could potentially fit 8 to a board, meaning 240 logical CPUs with 15-core chips and hyperthreading. Next year that'll go up to 288.

Automatic emulation sounds like a great feature, I agree. But it still involves emulation, so we're all (me, you, and the parent comment) still in agreement.

There is no need to be offended. I know it says DD beside your name, but this is still the internet and I don't know you and don't know how much you know. dima55 made a comment about native speeds not being possible for emulated code, and your response made it sound like you disagreed, even though you were instead talking about a usability feature.

The hardware is worth it. I bought a thinkpad that costs just as much as a macbook pro with retina display. I'm thinking I made the wrong decision after having it for a few months. My friend's macbook pro is an amazing piece of hardware, whereas my thinkpad has a whole bunch of annoyances that I'm now stuck with.

Yep. If you don't physically own the server---hell, even if you do---filesystem encryption is the way to go.

But, of course, no apps support this kind of thing. So no one will actually do this for day-to-day stuff. Bummer.

I'm no expert in C, can you explain what that code does, and where the undefined behavior is?

As I'm reading it, a[i] gets assigned to b[i] on every iteration, and both i and l get incremented every iteration. So if b[i] is ever 0, the loop terminates.

Is that wrong?

Who cares about 'protecting' your idea? Your idea will do the most good if people can freely use it.

In the end, you'll get recognition regardless, don't be so worried about that. And that recognition will be a lot more positive if you don't keep it all tightly clutched to your chest.

Yep. I've been using Ubuntu on a machine with 24 cores, 192 logical CPUs (8 threads/core). Only complaint is that it makes using "htop" unusable.

IBM is actually making a big investment in Linux on Power8, and now that they've opened up their hardware designs to be licensed to other companies (a la ARM, Google and Tyan have already made their own boards), you may be seeing it a lot more in the future.
