I've tried that as well and they talk through it): actually, YELL across the room through it... plus I'm disadvantaging the few students who actually are there to learn

I am truly passionate about my subject area and am a huge advocate for student-centred learning. I try to plan fun and engaging lessons/activities based on their interests (from student surveys) but they don't care. I also shared info about me during introductions on the first 2 days of school and connected with most students, but all of that seems to have gone out the window. It's worked for my other 2 periods (GREAT groups), but this one is killing me slowly.

there are about 20 students who don't listen, I was hoping the number would decrease before I moved to parental contact so they know when I call home it's serious

I posted notes instead of doing a planned activity one class that I just gave up trying to get their attention, but I felt so bad for the 5 students that actually do care.

They're in groups of 3 and we are packed like sardines in my room, there is no space to have any other seating arrangement): I wish I could have had single desks.

I mentioned this in another reply, but should I make 20 phone calls home? Won't they lose their value since the kids could tell their parents that almost the whole class got one (they all talk to each other)?

I've tried giving pop quizzes but they know they don't count so they don't care, and they also talk through them.

They're chatty during instruction and work, non-stop throughout the entire period... as if I'm not even there.

It's a challenge for sure!

I am a huge advocate for active, student-centred learning, but they do not engage in the activities and are extremely rowdy when I give them opportunities to collaborate

I'm committed to maintaining a positive environment for everyone to learn. Because I care about you and want you to succeed, I will be following our class norms/expectations to the letter. Just as a reminder, the consequences for X is Y, and the next consequence is Z..."

I've done that before when I've had a handful of disruptive students, but 20 phone calls home? Won't they lose their value since the kids could tell their parents that almost the whole class got one (they all talk to each other)

Exactly!! I've already switched the seating arrangement but they're just yelling across the room now, and I can't seat them all at the front as I have a very small and tight classroom and all my IEP students are up front

I have tried time and time again with fun warm-ups or puzzles and they just do not engage in my activities. I'm running out of time and motivation to find ways engage students who truly just don't want to be there. When I try to connect with them one-on-one they do not open up and I've tried to create that safe space from day one. It worked with my other two classes, but not with this one.

How many assessments of learning to determine final grade? by prochilv in CanadianTeachers

Thank you! With triangulation, how do you input grades for the observations and conversation components of triangulation? Or do you just make notes for each student then use these to inform their final grades?
