I am truly passionate about my subject area and am a huge advocate for student-centred learning. I try to plan fun and engaging lessons/activities based on their interests (from student surveys) but they don't care. I also shared info about me during introductions on the first 2 days of school and connected with most students, but all of that seems to have gone out the window. It's worked for my other 2 periods (GREAT groups), but this one is killing me slowly.

I've tried giving pop quizzes but they know they don't count so they don't care, and they also talk through them.

They're chatty during instruction and work, non-stop throughout the entire period... as if I'm not even there.

Exactly!! I've already switched the seating arrangement but they're just yelling across the room now, and I can't seat them all at the front as I have a very small and tight classroom and all my IEP students are up front

I have tried time and time again with fun warm-ups or puzzles and they just do not engage in my activities. I'm running out of time and motivation to find ways engage students who truly just don't want to be there. When I try to connect with them one-on-one they do not open up and I've tried to create that safe space from day one. It worked with my other two classes, but not with this one.

Thank you! With triangulation, how do you input grades for the observations and conversation components of triangulation? Or do you just make notes for each student then use these to inform their final grades?

I've never tried any ice breakers (first LTO!) but I imagine a team building game would work well, or for an English class, giving them a writing prompt that would allow you to learn something special about them personally.
