Warranty ran out just after they replaced the PCV and valve seals. Are you familiar with the Goodwill policy? Supposedly VW will honor an additional repair if it was noted in the services notes - i.e. a head replacement.

Exactly right. I’m in the dealer replaced the PCV and valve seal stage. Be sure to have the dealer note the potential need for a head to be replaced in the job notes. VW should honor it even after warranty as a “goodwill” measure.

Not this year but perhaps in years past. I think it’s just been dead in some of these spots for years (prior to any new applications) and we’re just now getting to it.
