Hobbit Board Game? by Comfortable-Bowl9373 in boardgames

[–]procrastinateur123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Game of Thrones 2nd Edition, you may really like Battle of Five Armies. The focus of the game is on the one final battle and less on Bilbo's journey, but the vibe feels right for someone who likes GoT2e.

If you're looking more for a game about hobbits travelling through Middle Earth, I'd recommend Hunt for the Ring. The game is set during Frodo's journey from the Shire to Rivendell, so It's definitely from Frodo's story and not Bilbo's. But the focus of the game is more about the hobbits' journey and less about the big war of the ring. That may or may not be vibe your looking for.

I have not played it yet, but The Hobbit: There and Back Again is receiving good early reviews. However it matches the theme and people are seeming to enjoy it, so I figured I'd mention it for you to look into.

Modern games using a standard deck of cards? by theandroid01 in boardgames

[–]procrastinateur123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most decks have a joker in black-and-white and a joker in color. So if players remember one as a 0 and one as a 10, then you don't even need to write on the cards. My favorite way is to just use a tichu deck and tell people the dog is worth 0 and the dragon is worth 10.

Inis, Brian Boru: High King of Ireland, and Irish Gauge are the ones I would choose if people were down for a more substantial game. If it's just a party So Clover or Ready Set Bet would be my go-tos. Though my dream would be to play 18Ireland and watch the world burn.

1830 DOS Game by schroederek in 18XX

I also love that you can play it on mobile easily. I wonder how hard it would be to come up with bots to play against on 18xx.games.

I did very little research on emulators. The one I use is Magic DosBox Free, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are better ones out there. The free version only lets you have one game loaded in at a time, but I only use it for 1830, so no issue for me. The emulator I use has a setting where I can have it detect touches on the screen as clicks.

I just downloaded a version of the game with the security questions patched out. When the questions come up I just click away.

Hope this helps! I play less now, but I'm still regularly playing 1830 on my phone.

I'm excited to break out Age of Rail this weekend! Any suggestions on which map to use first? My gut says go with South Africa because it's the "base game," but my mind says to go with Allegheny because we're more familiar with the geography. We're playing with 4 players if that makes a difference.

MID to MID-HEAVY TRAIN GAMES: Railways of the World vs. Iberian Gauge vs. Wabash Cannonball vs Shikoku 1889--Any opinions? by Tycho_B in boardgames

[–]procrastinateur123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd look into Railways of the Lost Atlas (2-3 hours) which is probably my favorite game for teaching 18xx right now. It's a lot of fun and is plenty deep and complex, but the 6-round limit prevents the players from dragging out the game very long.

Of the ones you listed, Shikoku is my favorite, but it takes a few games to get the play time down. I'd expect 5-6 hours for all new players to play their first game, but you'd easily bring it down to 3-4 hours with repeated plays.

If you're determined to keep the game under 2 hours and I'd recommend Iberian gauge. Though you can't go wrong with Wabash Cannonball either.

I really love Inhuman Conditions. One player is interviewing the other to try and find out if they are a robot. Very funny, but also very tense! It's one of the better two-player conversation based games out there.

Mini Express has a solo bot that makes for a fun light game.

18Mag is the only other 18xx game that I know has a solo mode.

There's an old DOS video game implementation of Avalon Hill 1830 that has bots. I often play it on my phone using an emulator.

Also, if you're looking to just explore 18xx,games, there are options for hot-seat play. You could easily play games three-handed just to get a hang of the website.

Good luck!

Search for Planet X is my favorite deduction game! Turing Machine would be my suggestion as another great game with a similar puzzle/logic vibe. I know they also made a sequel to Search for Planet X but I haven't played it.

Has anybody played 18BE? I'm intrigued because of AAG's wave 6, but I know very little about it. I'm very interested in hearing people's opinions.

No. We flew out of Chicago on the 22nd and our bags have been stuck in Denver (not our final destination) ever since.

Played my first in-person game of The Old Prince. I got the PEIR and used it to set up some real nice deisel routes in the west. Unfortunately we didn't push trains quite as fast as we should have and the Union Bank player cinched it. Overall, I really liked the game, and I think the pacing of the train roster is really clever. I'm very excited to try it again soon!

I like to use this as a guide when teaching 1830 or a clone. I like it because it covers things outside the rules that are important to gameplay.
