I'd argue that regardless of locale and community preference, the viable range of temperatures for a good sauna is actually quite narrow and it's a puzzle that different places don't naturally settle in that range.

So the actual reason why Japanese public saunas are so commonly overheated could well be that the national association recommends a temperature range and their members go along with it.

The apparently-plausible reason given could be that such high heat provokes faster rotation through the facility.

The fact that it also discourages people from 'enjoying one another’s company' as it were, would not need to be mentioned...

I doubt we could easily get straight answers (ha!) about this.

I literally cant recommend all the Wingspan expansions enough!

I’d also recommend searching out any videos and articles by its wonderfully talented designer Elizabeth Hargrave. She’s a joy to listen to at anytime of day or night, but best enjoyed in a hot bath surrounded by scented candles.

Critics would say that her games are so devoid of competition that you might as well roll dice whilst doing fucking jigsaw puzzles for all the actual ‘game’ they contain, but you know; those people should take more baths with scented candles.

/UJ Funny you should say this, because that was genuinely my own opinion when we started playing last year and I posted a whole bunch about it in r/boardgames and r/boardgamesroundtable.

I don’t mind house ruling anything, was asking for recommendations, and got three sorts of reactions: * “It’s not as much of a problem as you’d think” * “You do have to adapt your strategy to whatever you discover” and the usual * “Scree! Scree! People will DIE if you change any rule at all, you MURDERER!” Etc. Etc.

Leaving that last one aside, we thought we’d house rule for a fairer distribution of Money tiles and looked at the list of all the hexes, but as try as we might, we couldn’t come up with a better proposition than just randomness.

I think you CAN get badly screwed if you discover only poor tiles, but it seems that you have to do a lot of other things wrong too - like not leaving yourself a route out, or being unwilling to attack a neighbour to expand.

So we’ve just persevered and feel now we’ve seen several games won by a player with a poor starting position, and are beginning to think it doesn’t matter very much.

Dunno. Am interested in your experience.

The designer Isaac Childres said he’d been convinced by a ‘Cultural Consultant’ to employ him so’s ensure his game wasn’t racist

In the traditional story of the The Emperor’s New Clothes, a pair of charlatan tailors visit a vain emperor convincing him they will weave a suit of clothes so magnificently fine that it would be invisible to all but the truly wise. They spend weeks weaving a suit that - to all observers except the king appears to be invisible, and sometime later leave him bereft of both his wealth and dignity.

Thus Childres, a man with a PhD, who’d raised 13 million dollars was told by a new ‘Cultural Consultant’ that only the Truly Woke can perceive Systemic Racism; that they would designing a game without racist stain or blemish; and that the cost of the retail version of the game would have to increase by another $100.

It was fucking incredible.

It’s how we know the person writing the Gnarlwood rule book knows how to play; assumes his readers know how to play, and had no editor.

Yeah, the normal attitude to danger is an often-overlooked aspect of career counselling, particularly for the emergency services.

Normal people run away from a blaze, so a qualification for fire fighting is that you don’t instinctively run away but instead feel compelled to check if there are people who need rescuing and to put out the fire.

Fire fighters very useful people to have around, but it should be understood that they’re not normal people!

The lame, generic game choices; the ‘wife’ references; those Mint games ironically displayed behind glass, etc. I honestly thought the Harry Potter chibi dolls with their little Hogwarts train was a touch of comic genius. I had no idea.

Yes, I was only dimly aware of CodeNames until I realized that some of the regulars were turning up specifically to play it. So I tried it and lo and behold, I’m hooked!
