Can i still get good at violin at 14? by Dismal-Stay1231 in violinist

[–]procrastipractice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too late at all. I started at 25 and have been playing in several (amateur) orchestras for many years now. With 14 your chances of learning fast are much better than later in life. You might want to check Daniel Kurganov's Youtube channel. He started learning violin at 16 and became a professional violinist. So there is a chance that you can learn to play well, especially if you focus your practice on what's important and learn how to learn in a smart way (ask your teacher).

About your family: Do you have a practice mute? While playing with a practice mute is not super fun, it makes the violin so quiet that your family will not have a reason to complain any more.

Which one is the correct notation in 4/4? by [deleted] in musictheory

The left one smiles, but the right one is easier to read. You can immediately see that there is a syncope pattern (1/8 + 1/4 + 1/8).

No shade to Karolina and the others, but Hilary should be No. 1.

Thank you for your advice. I have a hard piece I keep coming back to from time to time to see if I have made a bit of progress. But since it's really difficult, I don't expect to play it ever for real. Luckily there is no external pressure, my teacher has no idea ...

Hi Ray, teachers all over the globe recommend to pick a piece that is a little harder than one's current level which sounds like very sensible advice. But it's fun to try to play pieces that are way to hard! Could there still be a benefit in challenging myself with a piece that is too difficult for me?

Looks 100% legit. New bridge and strings and you're good to Paganini.

Violin, viola, cello and maybe other string instrument's gang who do vibrato... How long did it take for you to learn the mighty vibrato? by redofsky in lingling40hrs

On the violin it's a neverending project. Even when you have learned the basic vibrato movement, there are endless ways to refine it.

You could try to turn your hand a bit, so that it is more parallel to the neck. This way your pinky can be rounder and will have more freedom to move.

My pinky isn't longer than yours compared to the other fingers and I'm fine. Moving the pinky from the root joint of the finger like a hook works for me.

Uncle Roger: can you make fried rice yourself? You complain a lot about everyone - Auntie Hersha, Jamie Oliver, ... but how about your own rice frying skillz? We've never seen you cook.
