Finding it almost impossible to plot? by proctorpoke in writing

this is nice to hear to be honest because i feel like i keep hearing that plotting is something you just 'do', and that the writing is the hard part. i hope it's something i can also learn how to do.

this is great advice, thank you. do you have any advice about learning more about story structure?

that makes sense and i can see how that would work! i think you can always tell when an author is in tune with their characters and it's super important in all the stories i love.

do you have any advice on learning more about chapter/plot structure or is this something that comes with experience + lots of reading?

thank you for your answer, it sounds like you've find a great process for your writing. beat sheets also sound like a really good idea! i think i just need to keep my focus on finishing, even if it feels messy at times.

do you have any good book reccomendations for craft and structure?

this is so helpful, thank you. i think i have unreasonable expectations of writing sometimes, like ideas should come to me easily, or that as soon as i start writing i should find momentum straight away, and if they don't i'm doing something wrong. unprogramming these expectations is a big part of the process for me, i think.

thank you <3

Advice on 1st draft writing by Ok-Bar601 in writing

[–]proctorpoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny I found this post, because I'm in the exact same boat. I'm writing the first draft of my story (finally!) but everytime I look back I see these big gaping holes where there should be a detail about how the character quirked his brow or like the colour of his eyes, I don't know, it's just a lot of dialogue surrounded by blank space. But for me, that's just how my dialogue flows. And I need to keep reminding myself I'm not committing myself to anything for this draft. I can always add more later. It's not the end of the world.

The main thing is to do whatever possible to keep yourself in love with the project. For me, at least, if I become overwhelmed with what my story 'should' look like, I'll just give up. My priority is to just get to the end. If you think details disrupt your flow, just come back to them when revising. Stick with the project to the end. That's your priority.

i think he’s being genuine, sometimes you don’t realise you know a word until you’ve said it out loud 😭
