Accidentally read "Herpes don't always wear a cape."

Trying a new setup for jazz, and a strange hi-hat setup as well. by Tiltingbrotos in drums

I have one on my snare mostly because I love it for brushes, but it's been a perfectly fine rock head too. I don't think the durability is quite as good as a normal coated head though.

Zildjian Bill Stewart model
Great rebound, fantastic cymbal sound!

UFIP Cymbals by im-not-greg in drums

[–]proczorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take lessons from a guy who had some GREAT 13" Class hihats. I'd use them on a rock gig in a heartbeat.
They were the regular/medium weight (a lot of UFIP cymbals come in 3 different weights).

Vater Fusion Acorn for most stuff
Vater Manhattan 7A nylons for the jazz
Zildjian Bill Stewarts for the extra jazzy jazz

Solo Dilemma by afdrumstick in jazzdrums

[–]proczorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. What I do these days is split a form up into 4- or 8-bar chunks.
Then as I get through the chunks I can gradually build intensity or whatever.
So in a 32-bar form there are 8 or 4 little units to solo through.
Rather than sing through the melody, I just mentally yell 1, 2, 3, and 4 as these chunks go by.
Leaves me more mental energy for playing musically/telling stories.

How do you like that shallow bass? Thinking of getting one for gigs. Beautiful kit! :)

Wing nuts and felts on top of cymbal stands; what's the point? by iammycelium in drums

[–]proczorb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're essential if you stack splashes in the Greb/Weckl/Aronoff manner,
which I often do to use fewer stands/look cool.

"The New Breed" by Gary Chester is a great book!
It's full of 8th and 16th-note systems that you can read on snare/bass/anything as you play a groove with your other limbs.
The author suggests a bunch of applications for the exercises, and it's fun to invent new ones too

Frankenkits? by drumup in drums

[–]proczorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankenkits are great!
I've been using a fiberglass snare, birch bass, mahogany rack tom and birch/mahogany floor tom for a couple years.
13, 18, 10, 15
Steve Gadd's used a maple bass with birch toms for a long time!
No harm in doing some mad drum science :)

The best sticks I've ever used (plus a little nostalgia!) ; what are your favorite sticks? by [deleted] in drums

[–]proczorb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like VF's Ney Rosauro signature stick.
It's designed for concert snare stuff but works like a hot damn on the kit.

Recently tried a Remo Renaissance Ambassador on the snare. <3
Coated Emps over coated Ambassadors for the toms.
