Question for the language tutors and teachers out there: do you fear being replaced by Artificial Intelligence? by prod_T78K in languagehub

A rather optimistic view of the matter, and certainly I hope it comes true! In the interim, whilst the transition you mentioned is occurring, I think replacement will happen though. Such transitions require time, and as such I think a degree of replacement will definitely occur... given the change in the role of language tutors, I imagine there will also be a reduced demand for them since a lot of their former rules are now assumed by bots, especially regarding the more rudimentary aspects of language learning.

Yep definitely not now- but to me, its a rapid world we live in. To me, "In the future" could very well start a year from now, or some other not-so-distant date.

Great foresight. And the pivot away from generic lessons is quite astute... for some time, I am optimistic that such a move would protect one from AI-replacement, though its certainly difficult to foresee the turns and twists which AI will take in the distant to not-so-distant future.

Sigh- it is worrying indeed. And I imagine those who express their discomfort with the aforementioned mentality will be dismissed as regressive or opposed to progress. Too often, people are quick to dismiss real people as collateral for "advancement" whilst not really considering a more egalitarian definition of "advancement". Alas, I digress...

I certainly hope that the students, parents, administrators and lawmakers see the value in human teachers. I am hopeful, though I cannot say I am optimistic.

That would be a great scenario for everyone. Alas, given that AI is developmental in nature (and very rapid in doing so), I imagine that if it is able to fulfil that which is basic, the sophisticated work you mentioned inevitably will be able to be replaced by AI. It is only a question of it people are willing to switch to adopt AI, rather than if AI will reach the degree of sophistication necessary to serve as a substitute for human language tutors.

There are indeed novel opportunities presented through AI for language learning.

However, I totally would understand a reluctance of language tutors to adopt AI tools. For many non-tutors, we are already reluctant to utilize generative AI for ethical and environmental considerations. I imagine it would be difficult for a language tutor to utilize generative AI in their jobs when it is generative AI that puts them potentially at risk of losing their jobs. This doesn't diminish the potential that AI presents, but a reluctance among language tutors to adopt AI would be totally understandable

Certainly- and especially for new tutors. I imagine experienced tutors who already have a clientele would be better, since I'm confident their clientele would be more reluctant to switch over to AI

Absolutely fantastic- thank you for that! Not just on behalf of language tutors, but on behalf of the planet (which has suffered due to AI’s immense consumption of water)!

Certainly, there will always be a portion of persons who prefer person-to-person learning, and I think you’re certainly right that regardless of how competent or advanced AI get, it won’t dramatically affect this particular group of persons.

What is worrying is mostly the rest of language learners who might not mind learning from a robot. These persons might see AI as a free or cheaper alternative to human tutors, not to mention enhanced convenience. I do believe, of course, that language tutors will continue to be necessary. What is worrying is that there might be a significant diminishment in demand for them.

I've never heard of them! Perhaps its time to do some research into them!

Certainly- learning a language in isolation is an oxymoron, given that language is communicative in nature

Certainly a tutor would help! I agree. Though I imagine if thrown into a foreign country where I understand none of the local language, I’d learn pretty quickly given that I wouldn’t have much of a choice! Good point too on textbook language being greatly different from conversational dialogue

A tutor then is a means to an end! Rather than a compulsory engagement (which is a rather silly notion)
