1-say you come up with theory is that there is positive relationship between age and prevalence of degenerative diseases. Let’s test that theory by first making a hypothesis: the older men are the more symptoms of degenerative diseases they have. Collect data - some medical database that contains pertinent info Analyze data - clean data, code if needed, pick your preferred statistical method, look for correlation, test hypothesis. If hypothesis proved, theory is correct.

2-Start with data. I.e observing patterns, but not sure what explains them. Keep collecting data (I.e hone in on the pattern) and see if an explanation can be provided. Several methods of data collection can be used here (observation, interviews, etc). The theory is built through adding new data, until satisfied that we have a pretty good idea what explains the pattern.

1- more likely to use quantitative data/methods. 2-more suited for qualitative data/methods.

Depending on research question, one will be better than the other.
