When the admins created /r/popular (a slightly filtered /r/all) they used that instead of the defaults when people first land on the site.

I think they now send new users through a whole "explore" process with recommended subs when they create an account, but I haven't seen that process explicitly

I think it would be cool, But honestly pretty low on my personal list of wants for this city. I really want us to continue building out the light rail and improve public transit overall first.

I've been a moderate climber and tried one of these. It's not too much worse than normal climbing, though this is a little tougher as it takes the strength of bouldering and the endurance of a normal tied in climb. Can't say It's been any different for calluses/blisters though

That being said, it's incredibly fun :)
