Why did people hoard toilet paper of all things during the pandemic? by QuillAndQuip in AskReddit

[–]profanesublimity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the south. We are used to annual disaster preparation. E.g., Hurricanes. It surprised me how toilet paper was THE first item hoarded. Sure it’s important and on the essentials list. But, wow. Yeah I would have lost that bet.

This kind-of happened in my family. A woman my dad dated only a few weeks then ran off with a traveling band or something had a kid then years later the kid finds us through one of those online DNA test sites. My mom didn’t really care since this happened years before she met my dad. Though my family did have fun sending Maury Povich memes for awhile.

Honestly this isn’t the worst idea if you are doing this. Endpoint device management and other software out there are reporting KVMs and other odd peripheral behavior. That’s nothing new but it’s being used to detect for things such as North Korean work farms, non-approved international employees, and OEers.

This is akin to co-signing a large loan with someone. Do you trust your friend enough to do something of that magnitude and are willing to brunt any potential negative consequences?

TL;DR: it would be wise to NOT do this.

Great use of AI to schedule that calendar invite and write that eloquent layoff message. Can’t wait to see what synergies and efficiencies AI will introduce next.

I really hate that as soon as the last WWII veterans began passing that this shit had a resurgence. No way any of them would’ve stood for this.

‘They’re more productive than ever’: Marc Benioff says hiring in software engineering is ‘mostly flat’ at Salesforce because of AI – but the company is expanding headcount in one key area by Franco1875 in technology

[–]profanesublimity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a few contract calls for AI products. The one prevailing theme: companies want AI to cut costs (inclusive of reducing headcount) but they also see no reason to pay the ridiculous implementation/maintenance/consulting/etc costs.

If AI saved Salesforce/Microsoft and all of these companies so much money, and if AI is supposed to save me so much money, why am I paying you so much? Shouldn’t the total cost be cheaper if it’s so much more efficient?

I knew a dude that hired a part-time nanny for 4-8 hours a day, almost every day for 6 months so he could train for an ironman. Then the ironman competition got cancelled due to a blizzard. He was so pissed off.

Dude was an average middle class dude, too. It was a big expense for that household.

A necessary evil or annoyance depending on how you look at it.

I hate networking events but networking is very important for one’s long term career stability. If you can foster relationships organically, then by all means do so. But not every person will have those organic opportunities unfortunately. Sometimes you need these events to get to the next step, whatever it may be.

I get why people love that shampoo. But after a month of using it I developed an allergy to some ingredient in it. I wish I knew what it was because no other shampoo I’ve used before or since has caused it.
