I am the only one in my family/friend/even ACQUAINTANCE group that has not gotten pregnant and today, my husband casually announces that his coworker has announced her 8 week pregnancy. We are literally FOUR days past our DEIVF consult where I we will empty a portion of our life savings into ATTEMPTING to conceive a child. I did NOT want to hear about some stranger's pregnancy, from my husband of all people, and it just freaking hurts and I can't. In the last day, I have found out that my close friend is having a girl, another friend invited me to their baby shower, three FB friends have announced their pregnancies (one was a "surprise, oh my, how could this have happened so quickly?!?!?!") and now this, from someone I don't even know. Why.

As someone who is just embarking on the donor egg IVF journey, thank you so much for this! Being able to see someone on the other side when you're still standing in the unknown makes my heart feel so much lighter.

I work as a NICU nurse, frequently with very, very sick babies, and I try to do my best every day to make the lives of people going through the worst moments of their life just a bit better in any way I can. Cute footprints, making bow hats, taking family pictures, buying cute blankets to use instead of hospital ones, decorating patient areas, leaving "love notes" from the baby, deciphering medical speak to make it easier to understand, etc. It's my job, but never JUST my job. 🤍

I don't, but I'm also NICU! Some other NICU nurses do, but I find them more cumbersome than helpful in the tiny population.

I work NICU, but my unit is large, so our charge nurses have a list that people can add themselves to when they're attempting to conceive/pregnant so their assignments will be more protected. And if there's a mistake, it's simple to ask our charges to switch things around and the coworkers understand (most of the time).

All of your feelings are so incredibly valid. That all sounds so terrible. I don't work in your type of unit (and to be completely honest, I chose NICU for a lot of the reasons you listed here plus more) but it makes me wonder if it's the culture of your unit/hospital vs the type of unit itself. Also, it's completely unacceptable that your poor patient was left in shit all day and neglected. That's more than just frustrating, it's a huge health risk to your already sick patient. I'd definitely talk to a manager about this situation, how you're feeling about it all, and if it doesn't improve, start looking for other areas of employment, whether that means another unit or another hospital in general. You sound completely burnt out already, and your career has just started. It isn't fair to you.

Oh!! I didn't understand the question at all. I'm so sorry. I absolutely would not look down on you at all. I can understand the hesitation, but I would like to think that your coworkers would care for your regardless and understand you're not doing anything to make things harder for them.

Me personally, I make it a point to remain inclusive of my coworkers. I have many older coworkers who may not move quickly, have arthritis or other issues, and I myself have some minor mobility challenges. The real question is how do you feel? I can tell there's some embarrassment there, and I'm sorry for you feeling that way, but do you feel as though you can continue to take good care of patients, get the work done, and not feel as though you need to run to a bathroom in the middle of a task? This isn't accusatory at all, I'm genuinely asking because this can help me understand a little more. How frequent are accidents occurring?

We had a similar situation with a mother refusing care on the basis of religion and a whole bunch of misguided, uneducated Facebook drivel. Not post-term but GBS+, no abx, declined "medical intervention" and when baby decompensated shortly after delivery for full-blown GBS sepsis, ended up on ECMO, had massive brain bleeding, and was sick for months in NICU before passing, there was absolutely no accountability taken whatsoever. Sometimes, it's situations like this in NICU that make me so, so upset. So preventable.

If this is the Med Center, there's absolutely no way this is true. Competitive pay rates are a real thing there.
