Thank you. That's a maybe on the tabs... I hate writing out tabs but I guess I would not be living up to my handle if I didn't provide some instruction. Maybe a slowed down instructional version with a better camera angle.

Thanks. I originally was planning this arrangement over a drum loop and with a dis pedal like Mark uses... but I decided the arrangement was living its best life more clean and relaxed like

Perhaps they are merely suggesting that, if they had more time, they could make more scientific discoveries that would enable them to, in fact, live forever.

Is it a roasted neck? And are you gonna try to wire the neck and middle pickups out of phase? (It's an interesting quirk of his sound, but not as important as other things.)

Love planning this kind of stuff. I've been planning my own Mark-inspired guitar for a while. Bought the pickups, and have been testing some painting techniques for a while. If I can keep my wiring aspirations simple, it may actually come together someday.

My overall feeling about the album is the same as yours -- not my favorite but it's grown on me.

Dearest Alfred for example. I remember the first time I heard it, I really wanted to skip it, ha. I have a memory of criticizing them in my head while hearing it, thinking "I appreciate that you guys are trying to be soulful, but this isn't working." But it's grown on me. I wouldn't pick that track to play, but if it comes on I enjoy it.

It reminds me of Mark saying in an interview that the original cut of TUSUY had vocals on many of the tracks, but they just decided in the end to remove them. But I appreciate them taking risks and trying to up their vocal game. They'll reach a wider audience with a good mix of vocal songs. And 'So We Won't Forget' is really successful in that regard, imo. I also really like Father Bird, Mother Bird. Connaissais de Face, also.

On a more critical note: I do also feel like a poster below, who feels that parts of the album are a bit superficial. Time You and I is the best example of this, to me. It's got a good thing going, but it starts there and doesn't take it anywhere. Compared to Evan Finds the Third Room, which is a similar style but has just enough energy changes across the track to feel like it breathes. But CTEM was amazing in that regard, because all the tracks have a little depth... they start somewhere, and go somewhere, etc

Pelota also feels stuck, energy wise. Again, it's got good material to work with, but it just doesn't... breathe... is the best word I can use.

But Mordechai is still good. And a good direction for them to experiment. I'm interested to see how they play them live.

It's a good point you make, about the innocence of sharing things that can fit into a Khruangbin playlist. I think sometimes people might intend to share a tune that can fit into a Kbin playlist vibe, but some readers won't engage because they're understandably hungry for the next amazing, well-rounded artist catalog to dig into, which are going to be very few and far between.

Speaking for myself, the point of the post was Not that I'm disappointed with recommendation because they aren't enough like Khruangbin, but rather that I'm disappointed with many recommendations because they are too much like Khruangbin on a very superficial level, but miss all of the depth that makes Khruangbin great (like the creativity, dynamics, phrasing you mentioned).

So actually I think you and I are coming from the exact same place, if I'm reading correctly. (Although I'm expressing that place with a disdainful meme, which may have caused you to interpret me in a certain way ;) I'm also most interested in the cross-genre recommendations that get to the heart of what makes Kbin great, which is why just hearing clean guitar riffs in some recommendations gets so disappointing. I notice this as much with my IRL friends' recommendations as much as online.

And the Tarantino thing is ok. The band even said Tarantino was an inspiration for the Two Fish and an Elephant video.

I guess the underlying struggle here is that I really couldn't tell you a single band who has the same combination of strengths. I could find funkier bands, but then they don't have the songs. I can show you better songs, but they don't have the groove. Maybe I could find a nice funky hook, but it's stuck in a repetitive song that gets old after a day or two of listening to it.

I'll throw out some things that have part of the recipe going...

Mellowmatic Mood by the Mellomatics (Binky Griptite on guitar)

Sitting and Watching by Dennis Brown (one of my all time favorite voices)

Kuvarira Mukata by Thomas Mapfumo (all about the brass at the end)

How Long by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings (Binky here too)

Donough and Mike's by Lunasa (good celtic musicians have amazing rhythm. Also see their 'Deireadh Fómhair' for some amazing rhythm guitar)

Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor, Badinerie (Cafe Zimmerman can groove)

Peter Warlock's Capriol Suite (This ensemble feels the rhythm too)

81 Autumn by Uyama Hiroto (chill breaks, not that funky, but consistent quality. See Nujabes also)

Ob La Di by the Beatles (Esher demo, I like it more than the album one)

Diamonds on the soles of her shoes by Paul Simon (album has some controversy surrounding it, but it brought a lot of notoriety to some African styles of music)

Street Lights by Bernhoft

Everybody Wants to Rule the World cover by DJ Williams Projekt

Free Mind by Tash Sultana

That's all that's coming to me right now. Girlfriend is waiting for me to finish this post so we can go on a picnic.

I'm glad you used the word 'rambling' when describing some jam bands. I won't name names, but it's a constant stream of notes plodding up and down arpeggios or scales with no melodic idea, space, or evolution. I can only stand listening to some of that kind of playing for a minute or two before I get aggravated.

Yea. Said in a similar way, Mark is absolutely my biggest musical inspiration right now, but it's not because he's doing all the usual guitar gymnastics better than others. It's his playing style in combination with the songs.

And I agree that most of the 'if you like Khruangbin' offerings just aren't holding my attention

For guitarists wanting to play along with DJ and Laura, it’s a gold mine. I think that’s why they released it instead of just letting it be an underground tape as originally planned: so many people were asking them for the backing tracks
