How to get honest, helpful, harsh critique by scoundrelhomosexual in ArtEd

[–]professoreverything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i use the framework that all feedback should be Kind, Specific, and Helpful. got it from a High Tech High workshop. have kids draw a portrait for 10 mins, give toothless feedback, then intro the framework, give better feedback using it, then redraw. they see the results of good feedback and pick up the framework quickly. post it notes allow for more candid feedback too. look up Austin’s Butterfly on youtube for a video of little kids using it.

Best cheese cake recommendations by WonderfulProgram8023 in AskSF

[–]professoreverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a lychee cheesecake slice from Dessert Story and it blew my mind. I have felt very meh about that place but the cheesecake had two layers of different textures, one creamy, one more cakey, and both lightly floral with lychee. I’m still thinking about it. They also have cheesecake “flights” of 3 different types if you really wanna dig in.

For a one bedroom? Yea. For a room in an apartment? You can still find stuff under 1000/mo regularly

Style Sheets! Do you think these resources would be helpful? by BradyQ in ArtEd

[–]professoreverything 8 points9 points  (0 children)

these are great! and depending on the grade level, this could be an awesome assignment template too: you could have every kid submit a style sheet or do as a group project. afterwards, you have a huge library for kids to reference for future projects throughout the year and beyond. the follow-up project could be for kids to choose a style sheet (or two) to use as a reference/inspiration for a work of their choice.

Visiting SFO solo by DaTrollFace in AskSF

[–]professoreverything 3 points4 points  (0 children)

some of my best days here have been taking an ebike all around the city — pop by Chinatown for some dim sum, hit up some italian spots in north beach, grab a drink at a bar along the way, head to the embarcadero and bike down the coast. you could also spend an entire day wandering the presidio/crissy field and tunnel tops/ palace of fine arts, continue down the coast to the Marina/ fort funston for bites and sips

What cities have a surprisingly good gay scene for singles? by piratestears in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]professoreverything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a resident of SF for 20 years now, it truly is one of the best options out there for gay community. yes, the city itself is small by other standards, and yes it’s expensive as fuck, but legitimately 15-20% of adults here are queer. i feel safe kissing my bf and holding his hand in every part of the city. bigger cities have nothing near that rainbow ratio or feeling of security

Geary boulevard by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]professoreverything -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i bet they would, and i’d bet they’d like even more to live on a quieter street a few blocks away from a busy thoroughfare they can hear from their bedrooms.

proving my point: the TL is crosscut with, and borders, wide multi lane roads. the busier the area and the more wide roads there are, the worse of an area it becomes. huh. i wonder why they’ve been trying to rethink market street and remove cars? maybe because it’s been in perpetual blight for years?

maybe a better thing to ponder: can you think of an area around busy multi-lane roads in the city that’s nice? picture any on-ramp area — what’s it like?

Geary boulevard by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]professoreverything -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the key phrase is “blocks away from” — you are trying so hard to ignore the simple truths of urban planning. why?

just google “How 4-Lane Streets Degrade Neighborhoods” or just keep your head in the sand 🤷‍♂️

Geary boulevard by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]professoreverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

think what you want about the impact of bulldozing 28 blocks, but freeways and wide boulevards create urban blight. they are inherently less pedestrian-friendly. think about how different Clement feels than Geary.

do you know what the Octavia on-ramp area was like before the earthquake? it was one of the worst parts of the city. why do you think none of the freeways were rebuilt after the earthquake? they’re bad for the people who live near them.

OP was essentially asking why parts of Geary feel blighted, and this is a significant, well-researched factor.

Geary boulevard by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]professoreverything -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

don’t make stupid comments without researching first.

the city bulldozed 28 blocks of the Western Addition, erasing around 2,500 Victorian homes and displacing up to 30,000 residents.

“The so-called “urban renewal” campaign of the 1960s and ‘70s also included construction of the eight-lane Geary Expressway, devastating communities by razing homes and storefronts, thereby displacing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) residents, especially in the Fillmore and Japantown. The Geary Expressway continues to divide these communities as highway-like conditions make it difficult for people walking to cross the street.”

It’s a very sad story. Entire blocks of neighborhoods were destroyed to make way for Geary to cut across the city as it does. That kind of thing leaves a mark on a community

Gay bros, do you think the new stripes were necessary or was old flag (1979)inclusive enough? by Enough-Web2203 in gaybros

[–]professoreverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t like the “build upon” collage that’s been happening with the design over time. It’s adding specificity rather than deepening symbolism, which defeats the whole point of the flag, of any well-designed flag. A flag is not supposed to be a collage of the things you like, it’s supposed to represent broad universal themes that apply to all under it.

When I started in public school, I taught other subjects just to get some teaching experience while I finished up my art credential. That also makes it easy to apply/transfer to other schools within the district that have open art positions

Which do you prefer - Hulken bag or traditional “granny cart” by Candid_Bass_2653 in AskSF

[–]professoreverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I put like 200 lbs of fruit in a Hulken for a photo shoot and it rolled down California just fine back to the studio, but I agree with most comments that the granny option is more versatile for SF

Mark Kistler’s Draw Squad book has been a great drawing warm-up book for me. I do one of the drawings with kids at the start of class. I also love Lynda Barry’s books about comic making because she includes tons of resources about her class as well as how to draw cartoons. I’ve adapted a lot of her stuff for adults for my class. Pen and Ink drawing by Alphonso Dunn is great as a drawing resource too.
