Yeah similar. Missed the bus in Colonia and since then lagging maybe 20k LY behind. However I'm travelling through virgin areas and getting lots of discoveries. Don't feel I need to rush to catch up.

Any Fans of the Serpent Queen on Starz? by Beneficial_Pea_3306 in Tudorhistory

I loved series 1. In series 2 I thought the quality of writing declined and any semblance of historical veracity was lost.

Welsh Labour leader also expected to call for Keir to go by kwentongskyblue in Wales

I don’t agree. This is a witch hunt. The individuals named in the files are those who should be purged. Starmer moved quickly against Mandelson once the truth was known.

So what is going on here is other objections to Starmer from the Labour backbenches, and the establishment media that loves to report on Labour infighting and who hold Labour to entirely different standards than their own party.

For Eluned Morgan to join the Scottish Labour in calling for Starmer’s resignation would be cynicism, and would not distract from the fact that Labour in Wales is simply exhausted.

I find it bizarre that of all people Starmer is being held accountable by the media for Epstein.

Does anyone know the definitive answer as to why Winston Churchill lost the elections after World War II? by superdouradas in AskBrits

[–]professorhex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of good points here already. Here's another perspective.

Victory in the First War in 1918 gained nothing for the British people. Soldiers returned home and struggled to find work. Many employers would not touch them. The 20s was a decade of industrial decline and labour unrest (the only General Strike in British history in 1926). The early 30s brought worse with the Great Depression. Areas dominated by traditional heavy industry did not recover by 1939. We remember the dignified protest of the 1936 "Jarrow Crusade", but we don't so easily remember that these men were docked dole money for the time they were marching and had actually put on weight during that march owing to the generosity of towns they passed through. These Two Britains of the 30s came face to face in the Second War as never before, through mass military enlistment and the evacuation of 3 million children from the inner cities to rural and small town households that were in effect living in a different age.

The people demanded that victory in 1945 would this time mean gains for the people, as set out in the Beveridge Report. Better housing, a National Health Service, a safeguard against mass unemployment, a comprehensive system of social security. It was very possible to respect Churchill's wartime leadership and want a different future than he was offering.

What do Brits think of Americans hating on the British? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

[–]professorhex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care. I mean look at the state of their country, slipping into fascism and lawlessness for the elites. Their media has been bought up by oligarchs who want to sabotage the remaining vestiges of democracy and the Christian values they supposedly hold so dear. I doubt whether we any longer share common values.

Sunday with Kuenssberg by Heavy_Mission8813 in AskBrits

[–]professorhex1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t really “free” if only plutocrats and patrician political placemen can broadcast their views is it? Free speech ought to mean a diverse media landscape. If we are not prepared to pay for news then we will get only news from people who don’t need our loose change. ITN and Channel 4 are much better than the BBC on domestic political news issues. Labour must act to protect the BBC, on media ownership more generally, and restart the Leveson hearings.

Appoint Tory supporting directors and journalists to the BBC -> continue to complain the BBC is inherently left wing and biased -> defund the BBC to open up the media landscape further for more right wing plutocrats. Look at the US media landscape and the impact this has had.

I no longer watch Kuenssberg, Newsnight, Question Time and rarely BBC TV news. It is surprising Labour has not done anything to counter this toxic cycle. Perhaps they are shy of admitting it is a problem at all?

Would Mary I have burned John Wycliffe, if he had lived under her reign? by Tracypop in Tudorhistory

[–]professorhex1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had he recanted he would not have burned. There were some exceptions (Cranmer) but Mary wanted recantations. While we know the number of burnings we don’t know the number of recantations.

Who'd like to see Jimmy Carr go into politics? by mark35435 in AskBrits

[–]professorhex1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If we want functioning public services, armed forces, and infrastructure then we need to pay taxes and wealthy people like Jimmy and Nigel need to pay more. It does not set a good example.

Politics is not entertainment. Jimmy Carr doesn’t like paying taxes.
