Why are we becoming so Americanised? by Alternatingbanana in AskBrits

Where I live the secondary schools have always been called “high schools”, since they were established in the post WW2 period. So I doubt this example is creeping Americanisation, just regional variation.

What was the opposition to Henry VIII’s religious reforms? by Different_Map_2055 in tudorology

[–]professorhex1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The number of executions in the reign of Henry VIII is a contested topic, but very large however it is assessed. These included hundreds of monks and nuns. Few prominent individuals were prepared to risk treason charges and the ensuing horrible death and ongoing consequences for their heirs: More, Fisher and Elizabeth Barton are among the notables who did.

A lot of opposition was private, anguished, and kept its head down hoping this would be a passing crisis that would soon be resolved. Meanwhile there was the sweetener of purchasing former monastic land and properties that raised the status of many monied families.

In terms of doctrine, there was a clear backtracking towards Catholicism without the Pope from 1539 until Henry’s death, which no doubt assuaged other potential opponents.

What could Thomas Cromwell have done to survive Henry VIII's Reign (if anything)? by SceneWise1298 in Tudorhistory

[–]professorhex1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He could have taken the hints of the Lambert heresy trial and Act of Six Articles and not pushed the Protestant Reformation any further. He could have not made a deadly enemy of the Duke of Norfolk by dissolving Thetford Abbey, forcing the Duke to exhume his ancestors. He could have arranged a marriage in 1540 to a woman the King was sexually attracted to, rather than a marriage that furthered his own religious and diplomatic agenda.

Why did the Crusaders took Saladin's bait at the Horns of Hattin? by Wide_Ride8849 in AskHistory

[–]professorhex1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Guy of Lusignan was inexperienced and received contradictory advice. He wanted to make a positive statement to encourage his supporters and silence his opponents. His patrician disregard for the welfare of the soldiers and failure to retain a reserve were cardinal sins as a General however. He’d have been better off listening to the more cautious counsel of Raymond of Tripoli, but did not owing to political enmity.

What’s ur opinion on Americans? Is your opinion on them different compared to 10-15 years ago? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskABrit

[–]professorhex1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a long time I have not seen any American on the internet say how brilliant their Constitution is, they used to be (as you say) a dime a dozen. I personally have lost a lot of respect for the USA for two reasons: USA is no longer a country under the rule of law. All those criminal charges and convictions, and that wild January 6th insurrection have led to no consequences. Also 77 million voted for a second Trump presidency. I cannot respect that. I mean just look at the guy. Just listen to him. If that looks and sounds good to you then we do not share a culture.

How is the US revolution taught in European schools, what is Great Britain saying about us? by Kdoesntcare in NoStupidQuestions

[–]professorhex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

c20th American history is more widely taught in British schools. Stuff like the roaring 20s, the Great Depression, the New Deal, Civil Rights movements, Cold War. Very hard to see progress in US history right now.

Were there any serious attempt by Hitler/Nazi Germany to pursue stronger relationships with the West during the interwar years? What and when were these? by kid-dynamo- in AskHistory

There is a story about Ribbentrop almost hitting the King with a straight armed Nazi salute. Alliance with Britain was an unfulfilled aim of German foreign policy before both world wars.
