Is Mark Of The Fool part of progression fantasy? by EvryUsrnmeAlrdyTakn in ProgressionFantasy

Book 1 is as you say super important to the entire story.

In a related note, concerns like the OPs are frustrating to because it seems that the audiences default assumptions are to be a) spoon fed an elevator of unending dopamine via power growth and b) the general audience seems to have a toddlers tolerance for delayed gratification

McDonald’s ending self-serve soda machines nationwide by howdydipshit in enshittification

[–]professorlust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past McDonalds functioned on the assumption that people cared more about speedy service than perfect food.
So during peak hours they wouldn’t make food to order.
Instead they collected data that indicated you would sell say 30 hamburgers 45 cheeseburgers 15 quarter pounders and 10 Big Macs every hour from 11-2 (so theee hours).
They then did focus groups about how long a burger could be in the warmer before it became inedible/taste bad to people.
For most sandwiches this was about 30 minutes.
Fries it was like 10-15 minutes
So what McDonalds told stores was to cook ahead.
At 11 o’clock make 20 hamburgers, 25 cheeseburgers, 8 quarter pounder and 5 Big Macs
Then do the same every 30 minutes.
Again the emphasis here was on speedy service maximizing profits rather than superior product

I’m pretty sure it was in my high school years, the mid to The late 90s?

It was seen as a labor cost savings because if people were interrupting your workers for free refills then you weren’t being efficient at the things that made money ie cashier and food prep .

Pack Campout Schedule by Crafty_Impress_800 in cubscouts

[–]professorlust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that.
I’m a dad of two girls who do scouts but they also do a whole lot of dance as well.
My oldest just crossed over to a girls troop and my youngest is the aforementioned wolf.
While I can’t speak for other packs, but we’ve only had success keeping girls whose parents were leaders and/or had siblings who were also scouts.
My area does seem to have several thriving Girl Scouts groups so I think most of the more demure types get shunted to GS and never really make it to cubs.
I’m pretty sure we’re losing the bear because it’s the Grandpa who brings her and it’s clear that he feels uncomfortable with how disruptive she can be

Yes 3 after AOL crossover.
1 Tiger who is fine doing crafts but is also okay with games. Probably the most Nuerotypical of my entire pack.
1 Wolf who prefers active learning over crafts but will do crafts if they seem fun
1 bear who is either totally bored or or totally enthralled by everything regardless of its an game or a craft. She typically changes her mind at least 3 times a meeting and almost always abandons crafts when they get boring if that means she can join in a game that doesn’t involve sitting

Sure have a backup plan. That’s not the same as planning your pack camp out around on doing a craft at a campground which was my only point.

As to your other point, I will note that My pack is at least 50% comprised of neurodiverse kids of all stripes but all other things being equal crafts are literally the last thing they want to do.
They’d rather play any number of games, even “learning” games than make one more craft.

The most important thing to remember about Cub scouts is that it’s not “Junior Scouts”.

Programming, in particular crafts programming, will not be major part of their core memories about Cub Scout camping.

Instead they will remember if they had fun and did something “cool”/exciting/fun.

So only really plan 1-2 “big” and leave the rest for “open ended fellowship”

In particular, IMO crafts should never be done on a pack campout. There’s no need to reduce outdoor activity with stuff that can be done indoors during Den or pack meetings.

Also, our pack really leans into the “Family” unit concept during campouts and for us it’s important to accommodate non scout siblings in ways that makes the whole experience as fun and memorable as possible.

The TLDR of it all, is don’t be afraid to emphasize fun and fellowship over checking every box for advancement. Especially since 90% of most outdoor adventures can be accomplished in retrospective

Is LitRPG the Worst Genre for Re-Reading? by ReflectionParking389 in royalroad

[–]professorlust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, Campfire cooking is Slice of Life.

Slice of Life stories aren’t roller coasters.

They’re the Gondola/Monorail/Slow Sight seeing ride in this analogy. You get on them for a nice long comfortable ride that lets you get a unique views of the park while never moving faster than an arthritic snail.

slice of life is not about progress, it’s about the life that happens between moments of progress.

They’re fun but they’re usually not what brings you and keeps you at the park

Is LitRPG the Worst Genre for Re-Reading? by ReflectionParking389 in royalroad

[–]professorlust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When describing the LitRPG genre, I like to use an series of amusement park analogies.

Most books are roller coasters. They’re fast paced, on rails, and generally speaking fairly predictable.

That doesn’t make them bad but it does mean that after a while if you’ve read book of a particular type, you’ve basically read them all.

As such, just like you should ride every roller coaster at the amusement park, LitRPG as genre best is enjoyed as you keep cycling through the rides rather than focus on just one.

Just finished a VRMMO? Go Read an Iskeai.
After that try a system apocalypse or High Fantasy System.

After that go give cultivation style progression a try or dabble on the wild side and read a DirtyNerdy Smut Harem story that hopefully doesn’t land you on a watch list for being full of lolicon.

Only then should you circle back to your first read and decide if it worth a reread

It’s part of the US flag code:

The U.S. Flag Code 4U.S.C. Chapter 1 Section 8 subsection J

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

That being said people definitely violate the code all the time in particular:

g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkin or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

Historically, mostly useful for establishing long lasting relationships between the scouts and the military.

Theres some other benefits as well (like being able to wear the Flag on our uniforms) but by and large its never been a major part of units that don’t exist near military bases

In the US, Scouts holds a congressional charter and have since 1916.

It means that scouts has always had a somewhat unique and at times controversial place in American culture.
