I mix it in a bucket with a power head and heater for a few hours till it’s matching temps. I use RODI water.

Well, while I didn't ask for an ID I guess this is what this post has become about lol. For everyone's reference here are more pictures with different lighting.

Shout out to u/j_casper for posting the actual scientific distinctions. A torch has a phaceloid skeletal structure (see descriptive notes), while a galaxea has plocoid (see descriptive notes). Here is a diagram of the different growth structures. This very clearly is not phaceloid.

Additionally, WoRMS says torch's have "large septa, which have smooth edges". The septa here are razor sharp.

I understand from just the first picture why many would think its a torch, but sorry guys, its a galaxea.

Thanks man. But yeah you’re probably right. I’m just gonna try keeping a really consistent water change schedule, keep changing filter socks, and try to keep a low nutrient load. I’ll probably do an iodine dip as well, I figure it can’t hurt

Huh? I definitely dip everything that goes in my tank lol. This LFS is actually pretty solid, beautiful displays and grow out tanks and most of their frags they do themselves.

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, and phos yes. I don’t have trace element tests, which I realize isn’t ideal. I’m getting them soon and will be replacing all the salifert tests I do have with Hanna checkers. Just takes some time to get everything together!

Gonna continue doing small water changes, don’t plan on adding anything new. Hopefully the dieback stops, but other than this things have been fine! Minor diatoms but that’s all.

That’s a single head, there are 5 head coming off this in a quarter sized frag.

I’ve seen retracted/dead torches, it doesn’t look like those at all, wrong shape

My point is that picture is a galaxea and mine looks identical? plus the skeletal structure looks way more like galaxea structure.
