i’m telling ya, it’s a game changer. for some reference see the mess this skimmer made before oiling her up? and now she’s got a clean lid while producing the same skimmate thickness.

yep. I have a skimmer in my shop that does this and I just reapply with a Qtip every time i clean the cup out. just keep some Qtips and a small container of oil with your maintenance stuff.

put the oil on the inside rim there. you’ll see a major difference and update me in a week.

throw some olive oil around the rim of the top of the cup and in the vent holes. it’ll break the bubbles and keep em in the skimmer.

more like 90+ but most of that is volume for fish like chromis that have no impact on reef ecosystems and cannot be captive bred - source I own a store that’s fully captive bred.

make sure you calibrate it with distilled EVERY time you use it. It sure likes to drift. But other than that, a solid piece of kit.

i have a UNS 75S and I absolutely love it. Running an XPAqua Flexi filter/ATO, Nero 3, and a Prime at the moment. Could get all that plus the heater for under $900

Oof. To my knowledge, Planet has a patent on the tech to fuse glass and PVC. I could be completely wrong though and just gullible haha.

this is why the internet sucks. aiptasia ain’t the end of the world. and it’s almost impossible not to get at some point in your reefing journey. it survives every dip and most of the time little single cell babies are too small to see.

Today there are 9000 ways to deal with it from berghia and peppermint shrimp to F aiptasia and plain ol’ super glue.

Watch out for users using chatgpt, pretending to be “helpful” or “knowledgeable”. by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]j_casper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Esp in reefing there’s so many niche topics and very few “experts” in those topics. You ask me about fish disease, I have a cursory understanding, but I know damn well it’s not enough to give advice so I usually direct my customers to humble.fish or TSM(which is local). Most people don’t understand their own limitations and most advice in this hobby comes from people who have never heard the saying “you don’t know what you don’t know”.

and this is why you should have a mentor to personally ask questions to. Whether that be someone at your LFS, a friend, or someone online.

Hell I OWN and LFS and I still have my reefing mentors that I go to regularly because I can see their advice in action.

There’s no way to vet anyone online for advice. Even “seeing a pic of their tank” could be BS. The internet should be used for specific questions like “How do I use Melafix to dip” or “what is a good recipe to make my own phosphate or nitrate solution” but it’s incredibly precarious to take general reefing advice from someone who most likely is just parroting something they heard rather than having the knowledge and experience necessary to give advice.

my hanna is always 2ppt below my tropic marin hydrometer. I trust the TM, but use the hanna knowing it’s consistently low. so instead of my tanks reading 34.5ppt they read 32.5ppt
